I ordered a Model S in April 2021. Long Range, back when they were $10k cheaper and coming by August (lol)

in June, the date moved to December. When I called about it, it was suggested in an oblique way that if I paid $10k more my delivery date might move up.

They got their $100 from me, but I cancelled my order then as well. Note my forum registration date, my wife reminded me how excited I was 'about that one truck' and said I should just get that.

She's regretting it a little because I don't do anything by half measures and I ordered a loaded to the gills one, but, cheaper than the tesla's new jacked up price, and way cooler.

Just go to the factory ?

you’ve gotta be less than 2 degrees of separation from someone who works there
I've already verified I am at one degree. If I can track down a HS buddy who worked at the old DiamondStar plant, and reportedly now works at Rivian now, I will be at ZERO. ;) "Steve! Is THAT you Steve old buddy??? Let me buy you a beer!!!!"

I'd wager you will get a firm delivery date once your truck is on a rail car...
I'd wager they won't be contacting everyone (or even a majority) of preorder holders by Thanksgiving, but I think the return on that wager would be pretty damn low.

I'd be happy to hear about ONE new Guide contact within this forum community since First-Mile.
I've gotten in the habit of answering my phone for every call, hoping one of them will be Rivian. I think it's made the amount of spam calls I get even worse even though I just hang up on every call right away that's an obvious bullshit call.

I would drive the 403 miles from my house to the Rivian plant to participate in the First Mile event there had they actually invited me.

I'm still hoping they will give me the opportunity to come down there to pick up my Rivian with a trailer in tow, and drive back home with the car on the trailer pulled by the Rivian. I'm 45 minutes from their facility in Plymouth. I was hoping that would push me up the list but it seems like they aren't so interested in delivering cars here.

Launch edition preorders are the ones to be contacted by thanksgiving/end of November, everyone else later. that’s what Rivian customer service told me a couple weeks ago anyway. Can dig up the transcript.

I'll bet that they contact all Launch Edition preorder holders.

they've been consistent about that. It's in at least one of the emails, if not more.

For those who have ordered Teslas when there was a backlog, what was that process like? When did you get updates, and how accurate were they?
My brother in law just took delivery of a Tesla Model S last week. He originally ordered in February. He is completely naive of the car space (espescially EVs) and thought he would get it pretty quickly and intended it as a Valentine's gift for his wife.

In his experience (as relayed to me), once he placed the order Tesla stopped reaching out (proactively) to him with updates. He literally had to keep calling them to get updates. His online portal wasn't even showing up with updates until _after_ each phone call.

My guess is we'll just see a mass auto email to LE holders in November to meet the "all LE contacted by Thanksgiving" mark. Unless they have hundreds of guides, or the number of LE holders is way lower than expected, it just isn't possible to have the 30min-1hr calls with everyone before thanksgiving.

25 guides
12 calls each per day
300 LE contacts per day
6 weeks (30 business days)
9,000 LE contacts.

Wouldn't take hundreds of guides, just a couple of dozen.

Some calls will be short. Not much for me to chat with them about until I can see and drive the R1T.

Here's a reference point (coincidentally got the email from Ford today).

In early May, I was considering the Mustang Mach-E, test drove it, liked it enough to place order (5/21/21) with a $500 deposit. Within a few weeks I decided to go with a RAV4-Prime, called local dealership to cancel for a refund. Instead they happily refunded my money directly but said they're keeping the order alive since customer orders can beat allocations sent to them. I pretty much forgot about it until Ford sent an Order status change email today with a scheduled Build date of 10/13. That's still not a Delivery date but shows you a well-established OEM is taking 5 month just to figure out when they can build it.
I cancelled my mach-e GT edition preorder I placed when they annouced after doing a test drive on Mach-e premium. I felt it's still a small car and Rivian will still beat it in acceleration. If I knew it'd be in such a high demand I could probably just buy and sell it myself. I can see some GTs around me are selling for $80k!

Unless they come out and say calls are limited to 30 min, I think 12 calls per day is a high guess.

While some calls are short, the initial guide contacts were email to set up a time for a call, then the call. So the schedule would be for a 1 hour call, even if it only took 15 minutes. They aren't just cold calling customers.

My guess would be closer to 8 calls a day.

Honestly, I'd be surprised if there were more than 1000 LE vehicles. It won't take them long to contact them all. The Toyota Supra had a Launch Edition that was only like 1500.
