What % of owners have experienced 12v battery failure?

YES it is "jumpable". There is 12V connection available for connecting a 12V charger or an external 12V source. If you are lucky and the battery was somehow discharged, but healthy enough to hold a charge, you can Jump start the 12V system. Unfortunately , in our case, and what seems to often be the case, the 12V batteries can't hold enough charge to fully wake up the vehicle and get all systems up and running. The good news is that you don't need much power to release the Frunk latch and get access to the 12V battery.

My speculation is for a production date correlation. Seems plausible that there was a bad batch from the battery supplier.

As @ndmiller noted, lead acid battery failures aren’t unique to Rivian. I know that I have had several parts-store batteries in other vehicles that failed prematurely. It made me a believer in forking over the extra $’s for an Optima redtop.

I have been fortunate. 1.5 years and 30k miles without any 12v battery problems. However, I know that many others have endured frustrating failures. It got me wondering just what % have failed.

I imagine that build date, mileage, dual vs. single batteries, charging habits, and environmental conditions all play a role in the likelihood of a failure. But, that's a more complicated data gathering effort. So, I set this up as a basic yes or no to see if we can come up with a simple % from this community.

This would be a skewed poll without a breakdown between year of vehicle, and type (R1T/R1S/1 or 2).

I did not have a failure, but out of the blue Rivian Service called me last week regarding a campaign to replace my 12v batteries. They said they would send a mobile service truck the next day. I took the opportunity to request a new set of wiper blades and cabin air filter. The service person showed up on time and did a full vehicle check as part of the service. Color me thoroughly impressed!

I voted yes as I’m scheduled to have mine replaced this week. Got a notice last Monday to replace the 12v and call service immediately. Have had the car 2.5 years (2022) R1T with 37,000 miles on it.

That’s encouraging. Sounds like someone at Rivian has been crunching the data and knows which batteries are likely to fail.

Did they give you a quote? Mine failed at 38k miles (which is out of the 3/36 warranty) and it was over $800.

It surprises me that it was that much. I can see a couple of hundred bucks, but $800 seems extreme. Is there any warranty on this new battery that you got?

Not quote yet. Does this not fall under the 5yr / 60,000 mile warranty?

When they do yours could you ask if the replacement batteries carry a 3-year warranty going forward? I forgot to ask and I received nothing in writing when I had my two batteries replaced recently.

Mine was near 20k miles and 2 years and had 2-each 12v failures replaced.

This is great.
I hope more people get this call as well. This might actually mean that they are replacing the batteries with better/improved units and are trying to avoid longer Service appointments due to dead cars.

I was told that the original warranty still holds. 3yrs from purchase date. I'm assuming that an out of warranty repair might hold an X amount of times/miles of warranty for parts and labor.
