Are they identical twins?....if so, who would know....LOL. Put one on the insurance and when the other one drives, have her give the ID that has the insurance....who would know.....LOLOL
LOL - Fraternal...Simply sisters born 4 minutes apart. The youngest is about 5 inches taller than her sister, but I do like the way you think!

Car play device from evsportline. Voice texting, waze, apple, google maps. Streaming of my favourite radio station from back home in London. Completes my R1's tech.
This is what I use to get over this issue (plus other benefits). Responding to texts is optional for me but having them read aloud to triage what's important enough is something I've grown used to. Link below.

<DISCLAIMER> This is not intended to be inflammatory, nor a solicitation for rationales, theories, motives, etc. but it is a sincere question to learn how others handle text communication in there R1 as there's no voice text capability, send or receive, through the R1's infotainment system<?DISCLAIMER>

I searched the forums but didn't find an answer. I asked my guide, but the response was not helpful.

In my state, texting: holding the device and reading or composing text messages is prohibited. (https://www.transportation.ohio.gov/phonesdown)

How do you handle text communications in your R1. I'm struggling, I have a nifty phone mount with my Galaxy 24 Ultra stuck on it and it isn't working as well as I'd like. The phone sleeps, never announces or reads messages on it's own and Google assistant is hit or miss for voice texting.

Alexa refuses to text.

I saw an aftermarket addon screen thing, but that seems like a "bridge too far". How do you handle it?
I have driven in several cars which have no Apple CarPlay, but can connect to the car through Bluetooth. IF you have an iphone and the phone is anywhere in earshot, you should be able to say "Hey Siri" or "Siri", then ask "What are my new messages" and she will read them. You can also tell her "new message" and then follow the audible prompts. Her voice should come through Bluetooth connection so hearing it shouldn't be a worry.

Does the audio play through the car speakers with this? I'm picking up my R1T in 3 weeks and am panicking a little with the thought of not having CarPlay
Yes. You have to select Bluetooth audio on the Rivian but it works great. Unfortunately, if you are listening to the radio, the sound can play either through the unit or through your phone.

Yeah, my Samsung Galaxy 24 Ultra does not have that screen. Samsung has One UI sitting on top of the stock Android, maybe that's why.
I have the same phone and LOVE IT. Like you I have been a Samsung phone user fortever. We do have this screen as well, its under Google Maps. You just need to make sure you have your phone connected via bluetooth for evertyhing, and you can respond/reply to text messages with your voice.

I tend to use Waze more than Maps, but you can still get texts to work with Waze. You just have to minimize Waze and then you can say Okay Google and tell it to read your messages or reply to someone. It used to work with Waze fully open, but last update of Waze made it stop working :(

Thanks,

Ken~

I let Focus mode auto-reply that I'm driving and that I will reply when it is safe to do so.

Texts handled.

With an iPhone , I ask Siri to “text” to whoever I need to reach . It’s been successful. Alexa won’t text messages unless I Bluetooth it, to cumbersome..?

Agreed. I have my iPhone paired to the truck, and when a message comes in I hear the notification chime from the phone, I say out loud, "Siri, read my incoming text." The text is read by Siri, and I'm asked if I want to respond. I say my response, and Siri sends it. It's all hands-free. I'm not sure how this would be handled with an Android phone.

I have an iphone and Siri works pretty well. With the phone connected to bluetooth I don't need to hold or speak into the phone directly. Siri does usually need the phone to be unlocked before she'll read me the text, which is kind of annoying, but not the end of the world.

I solved this by changing the “Auto Lock” from 30 seconds to 30 min or more. Then most likely the phone remains unlocked most of the time it’s in your pocket, but still locks up if left behind someplace.
Another option is to set the "Show Preview" option of the Settings > Notifications > Messages section to "Always". This allows Siri to read texts without unlocking the phone.

Androids (at least our Pixels) have equivalent functionality (both driving/focus modes and a very good talk-to-text function)

Unfortunately this is yet another great Google utility that they have shut down. I never even realized that they did as I've been using Android Auto, but after reading this I went to go enable it on my Pixel 7 Pro and low and behold, I can't find it. A little more searching and I found out why.

For those who say you should wait until stopping to deal with texts, in general that's a good idea. However, there are instances when texts can be more urgent, and may require more than a boilerplate "I'm driving vs can't respond now" auto-reply. One example that I have to deal with regularly is emergency hospital texts which are sent to a group (and often require a response). If I'm driving on the highway, it's much more efficient to be able to respond as I continue driving to the hospital.

This supports Android Auto, too: https://evsportline.com/products/ap...eJSbP6Acjtzmqxc1UNgy3y0XyjlFFAVmk_I9LMcUmhw8P

It’s $100 off now and you have to choose -2024 or 2025.
edit: just saw the 2025 version

I went there right after I posted. Do these go on sale often or is this a one time thing? As I've only had the car for a couple of weeks I want to try to give it a little time before going 3rd party, as I can use my phone right now with a mount. Not as pretty, but gets the job done. For this if you who use this screen with Android Auto, have you noticed any negatives vs a fully integrated Android Auto experience?

I don’t know how often they go on sale. I actually just bought one about an hour ago so I can’t say much from experience. I wanted this mostly for off-road navigation via Gaia GPS. This way I can have that on the external screen and the drive modes with instrumentation on the center display. It should also be nice for on-road navigation since I should finally be able to simply tap an address in a calendar item and get directions again, yay!

If my wife is in the car with me, I let her respond. If I'm alone, they will call if it's important enough otherwise it can wait until I get to where I'm going.
