Read Lock / Unlock signal?

Hey guys,

I am looking for a way to read the vehicles lock or unlocked status. I am working on a way to read this signal in order to use it as a trigger for something I am building.

My top contendor for reading this signal was going to be the gear guard cable locking system in the bed of the truck. However, when I got in there it looks to be a bit more in depth of a canbus signal versus what I was hoping would be a simple on/off solenoid signal.

I had hoped it was a solenoid, but its actually this little motor that rotates and engages the locking arms.

Does anyone else have some ideas of a simple signal or lock somewhere in the truck I could read the signal?


Other thoughts included the door handles but this seems like a read pain to run wiring.

Mine seems to lock and unlock randomly, but I would love to know how I'm doing it wrong.

Home assistant has a HACS plugin for Rivian that can read lock state. It's all web based so if you are building a smart home/web triggered thing that would likely be your best bet. On the other hand, if it needs to be a low voltage trigger I might look into a 433mhz wireless contact sensor in the door handle that can talk to a low voltage relay/switch. don't know how small they make em and if you could get it to fit and look hidden/nice but that's the route id explore first. that said, it looks like you are open to ripping the car open a bit so maybe you could even mount a reed switch on the gear cable motor arms and then have a circuit/low voltage trigger based on that?

Now you've got me thinking a bit more. I like the idea of the REED switch. Maybe I could mount a small magnet in the door handle that would key off the proximity of the handles being either in or out (locked vs unlocked)

What did you end up doing for this? I’m needing to get a “vehicl e stopped” signal for my emergency warning system (this is a fire department vehicle) and was thinking of using the door handle or EPB system.. Let me know what you found.
