Size was disappointing for both vehicles. R2 is about the perfect size for my wife and R1 is perfect for me. The Scouts are both really huge. Will there be smaller models out later, closer to R2 size?

For my use case, I’m super stoked for the specs of the Scout given it seems it has the off-road chops…but holy crap, 91” width is insane…I’m already a bit bummed I can’t take the R1T through a lot of tighter trails I used to be able to do with the 4runner…

I have not been following Scout much and was expecting that in a few years my model Y would be replaced by an R2 and my R1T by a newer R1T. Just reserved the SUV and the truck with gas range extenders. Not sure if the Scout replaces the R2 or R1T but the gas range extender got me sold (for now) for towing reasons.

Looks nice, but it's just a concept at this point, and some of those features may not make it to production - It's at least 3 years away from production, and highly unlikely the starting price will be anywhere near $60K. Pretty much every EV SUV and Truck has come in significantly higher than promised when it actually went on sale. If they can hit that target without really stripping it down (range, features, etc) it will be a serious competitor. But they will also have to nail the reliability, service, etc - all the stuff Rivian is struggling with now...

VW's EV motors are not particularly reliable at this point, and their software apparently is so awful they are paying Rivian billions for software etc. If Scout succeeds, Rivian will succeed as well. Merger/Buyout down the road seems possible too but who knows...

Range extender will definitely attract some buyers though.

Looks like you are trying very hard not to like it. Stick with Rivian. The idea of variety is to satisfy a market with different needs.

And that’s OK. 300M+ people in the US. It’s good to have options.

I think the heritage factor is attractive. The buttons is a big deal for many people. RE is a huge plus. Looks are fantastic. Like a Rivian and a Bronco went giggity giggity. Looks aggressive and capable but good enough for daily
driving.

Glad you like it. It’s just not for me. For example, heritage gets zero points from me—it’s not even owned by an American company.

I will also say there is zero chance they sell these at $60k in 2027. VW is also one of the slowest at releasing upcoming models. Think about how long the ID.Buzz has been in development. By the time these are for sale Rivian will be much further along as well…

This honestly looks great. I like the design, I like the low lift height of the frunk, I like the gas extender, I like the interior with the knobs and buttons. They are both WAY BIGGER than they look. Given VW’s track record this will be out by 2028 at $20k more than advertised, and given how quickly Rivian rolled out R1S Gen 2 I’m sure Gen 3 will give it a run for its money (and also have a 3rd row)

So it's both longer and significantly wider than the R1S but no 3rd row...weird. Seems very off-road oriented but a bit too large to be practical. Like a Hummer EV maybe. Efficiency will be worse than R1 so it will need a huge battery to hit 350 miles of range. Styling looks good, nice to see some buttons, interior looks a LOT like a Rivian, but 3-4 years is a long time to wait...you could lease an R1 now and the lease would be up before these are available. And that's assuming they bring all the fancy stuff to market. Will be interesting to see if they can do it.

The R1S is already bigger than I need but is a nice blend of very off-road capable when needed and very comfortable/practical the other 90% of the time. Seems like they are going after the Jeep/Bronco/Hummer demographic more than the Rivian demographic. Plenty of room in the market for something like this and I hope it does well but I think I'll be sticking with the R1 and R2 when it comes out.

Uh Rivian, We've got a problem.
If Scout delivers, it's going to be a very compelling vehicle. Heck, I've already put in a reservation for both the SUV and Pickup. My wife admitted she might want the SUV over the R3X. It's going to be a hard road with competition like this..

Also, it's pretty obvious Scout is using Rivian tech that VW bought. The infotainment screen's Nav is identical to the R1 and Scout boasted about the "modern zonal architecture" which I guarantee is coming straight from the R1 Gen 2.

The range extender is a very surprising move. With one move, Scout just killed range anxiety for any naysayers. Frankly, I want that drivetrain for overlanding.

Well done Scout. With VW's backing, I have zero doubt they'll be successful. They certainly aren't as boring as VW.

Now I’m infinitely glad I decided to lease my R1S instead of buying it.

Agree with all of this. More of a Hummer EV competitor than R1. Too bad because an off-road focused R2 competitor would have been awesome.

And 350 mile range on something that size will take a huge battery pack, maybe 160+ kWh, maybe more, no way will that trim be under $90k at release.

I really hope they deliver for everyone who it really is for.

I don't have range anxiety/needs beyond what either R1 provides. I don't need all the off-roading capabilities, like the locking diffs. Camping features are great for me on the Rivians. And style-wise I really like the Rivian design style, obviously. The size of the R1 vehicles are spot on.

The Scouts, as similar as it may be, fill a slightly different market; some overlap, sure, but different enough imo.

That integrated rear spare mount on the Scout SUV is clean though. I have the RigD mount now which looks clean too, but it's not easy to swing open for my partner, and it blocks all the rear sensors so it's not ideal.

Oh and the front bench is cool. I could see my dog really loving that middle spot.
