Starting to get a little cold feet. Seems like a racket just to figure out what chargers really work. Plugged in info in the plug share app and tried a trip and still not fully understanding which are "fast chargers"
Why not just use the Rivian app? It'll only show you compatible chargers by default, and you can enable the adaptor filter as you deem necessary.

Excellent info. Haven’t done the drive in the EV yet. I’ve heard el centro is usually always packed. I’ve got 370 range at 100 but those mountains won’t care lol
I've had great results at the EA in Yuma too. Plenty of places to walk to for lunch too.

Yes, this. use the Rivian app and in car navigation interfaces. Learn how to properly filter the compatible locations, and if you have an adapter, make sure to select that option.

Here's a screenshot from the app, under the trip planning area. You can select specific charging networks, the speed and these options.

Longer trips with any EV involves better trip planning.

With my max pack, I think Yuma might be a perfect ‘in the middle’
I should have mentioned I stop more for me than for the vehicle!:whew:

If the Tesla station doesn't show up here, it's not adapter friendly.

Download the Tesla app and select filters… It will show what is compatible and open to Rivian

Well, nobody complained really, the guy who gave us the tow , randomly came to that mini mart to get a snack, said he had a trailer around the corner if I wanted a tow, I asked how many pounds is the trailer, and he laughed. 50 bucks he said, 5 minutes later we were on the road to the next tesla super station. Completely empty, and none of those worked either. So that was really a test of the "Incompatible" setting. And it was correct. THe next one was a wallmart, and we didn't bother testing that too. So for 50 bucks more he agreed to just take us to each next one, and I tried charging while still on the trailer. He had the skills to pull that giant rig into any little spot. So, we ended in the RAN. at 9pm on a Sunday I was the only one. So a pretty easy solution considering how that could have gone. No complaints, and before anyone gets too worked up. I was all user error, but does show that you can't just drive wherever yet. You need to plan or adjust your advventuring.

Maybe with the 400 mile version, or eventual 500 mile versions, its a non issue, but with 300, you are still slave to being a bit better prepared, and some experience. Thanks for the help and input here.
That trailer guy saves the night! Must have been heaven sent!?

About to pick up my R1S in less than 2 weeks. Do a lot of road tripping. Will the Rivian phone app or website help me also trip plan with “compatible“ chargers ? This poor guys experience sounds like a nightmar. Current Tesla owner
Download the ABRP (A Better Route Planner) app. You can configure your vehicle in it and plan your trips. I’ve used it for my Tesla and Rivian, did 3 long trips of 5500, 6400, and 7400 miles with no issues.

Use the app to plan the route and then just plug the next charger into my Nav to get between stops.

The map in the app also is a good way to see chargers in a given area that you can use.

Download this, download that; if you are unsure what chargers your vehicle can support, just use the Rivian app. I hate this trend of "just download this app and spend 4 hours planning your next drive based on where you want to charge" when you already have all of the tools you need in the same app that turns on your butt warmer.

Unfortunately, Rivian doesn't have all the networks in the app or the nav.

For example, Circle K is rolling out a network and Rivian doesn't have it. I've submitted a request, but it hasn't gone anywhere.

I get that; but for users like OP who got stranded at an incompatible charger because they didn't realize not all superchargers were the same, and had to get towed to multiple other chargers to find one that worked, I don't think it's reasonable to expect them to download a slew of apps and do a bunch of planning.

If you're unsure where to charge, start with the Rivian app. If there are no good options for you, branch out.

I don't disagree with you at all. The key to this all is that my parents should be able to own an EV lol. It is too complicated right now.

That much I completely agree with.

From day one, I've argued for better education/marketing standards for describing vehicles and chargers. My biggest pet peeve are people who don't realize that their 50kW charging vehicle will not charge faster because they plugged into the 350kW charger. The best way I can figure out how to overcome this is to brand vehicles and chargers with very specific categories:

50kW capable vehicles: "fast charging"
100kW: "very fast charging"
150kW: "super fast charging"
200-250kW: "ultra fast charging"
250kW+: "hyper fast charging"

You could even have a 1 through 5 graphic on every charge port with a specific color that matches that of the charger you want to use. It would make it immediately clear to everyone that using a faster unit doesn't benefit them, and using a slower unit will result in a slower charge.

Im sorry this happened. In the future I highly recommend ABRP for planning your trip. Hopefully the kiddos didn’t kill each other and the wife didn’t kill you ?

it can be a memory though. Ten or 20 years from now. Hey remember that time we ran out of juice in the Rivian?
