Tesla owner considering R1S

Nope. He's licensed electrician who has done a lot of work for me. The plug was installed in an unfinished garage; the sub-panel in the garage is only 18 feet from the plug. His crew got it done, tested and active in about 30 minutes.

It was $160, cash + bought the guys lunch. I like the crew.

Did you provide the materials yourself? 18 feet of 6/3 romex is at least $75 itself.

Exactly, I had my Tesla charger installed in my garage as they were finishing up, put it right next to subpanel, was maybe $200 for install total. Of course, the Tesla charger itself was a bit more expensive, and supposedly requires a specific Tesla installer, lol, but 13 months in, with 2 EV's, it's going strong.

As for range, wind and temperature seem to be the biggest hit to range. If you are in a cold area or windy area, expect a hit to range.

I have seen some complaints about cruise control, I personally think it’s great. Not sure what’s not to like. And I really like the auto drive on highways. I’m at the end of a 1200 mile road trip. Day 1 cold 10 degrees. 1.48 m/kw. Also good head wind. Travelled 70 mph. Day 2 no head wind temp close to 35. 1.70 m/kw

today, getting closer to 1.8 m/kw. Temps 35. Really low winds but going up. Started MN 1000 feet, ending WY 6500 feet.

I have the dual max. R1S. I have been charging to 80 to 85. I’m actually charging to 100 right now. It’s a long pull in the middle of nowhere and don’t want any issues with low battery. If it stays warm it will be easy, but I cut through west Yellowstone which is cold.

I have Rivian AS tires. They say AT on them. Not the most efficient, but not rough or loud.

I mean... I COULD have called the regional Corporate-owned electrical contractor outfit, but I would have been looking at $800 easy, because, you know, the shrink-wrapped logo'd service trucks and matching uniforms and, all and a $75 fee just to step foot on the property. (I've used them during an emergency or two).

Yes. Seeing a drop in range now that the days are barely getting into the 30's. Cabin heat, heated seats and the splendid heated steering wheel kinda take a chunk out of the energy.

Gen2 dual R1S max pack and range wheels. You already know what you’ll miss from driving a Rivian vs Tesla - infotainment, FSD, and navigation wise. Rivian can go in more off road locations as expected while keeping access to charging locations more in mind. Percentages here and there are just too dependent on a lot of things/variables to really be the basis for a decision. My 2 cents.

Hello,
Model S Performance owner considering R1S. I have scanned many of the threads on here, very informative! Couple of specific range-related questions hoping people WITH 2025 DUAL MOTOR R1S can weigh in on:

Background / context: I have over 50k miles driving our Model S, so well aware of EV ownership and charging best practices and planning trips and highway usage etc. Zero interest in performance option or tri/quad. I have a Model S performance with ludicrous package and this being my wife's family vehicle moving dogs and kids, we never ever step on it. Slow/adequate is fine, we have other go-fast cars.

1. What's the realistic range I can expect from a dual large+ with road tires (either the aeros or the other option) I saw the Out of Spec review of the dual max coming in at 346, but it was done on a gen 1. Is gen 2 similar for 70 mph highway cycle or are folks observing more driveline efficiency?
2. 50% of our EV driving is driving 210 miles to our cabin in one go (charging at home).
3. 25% is towing a small trailer with a dirt bike (electric!) 160 miles round trip (charging at home).
4. 10% is a long road trip exactly 335 miles one way with one charging stop in between (supercharger).
5. Rest is around town (charging at home).

A Model X long range would fit the bill and be the known commodity, however R1S looks a bit more appealing than the boiled egg vibe in the X. Thank you!

The range on my G1 2023 dual max has been great and very close to rated range, so you could consider seeing if you can find a lightly used G1 R1S max pack if the extra range is important and are worried about the G2 max actually being worth it.
