This is the direction I'm headed, get the minimum legally required, then self-insure. The insurance companies are setting the rates where they think they are likely to make money on you.
Back in college, I got an insurance quote on a $1,500 600cc (“high-performance”) sport bike of something like $2,400/ year. They were expecting me to total it within 8 months. :) Luckily, I found an alternative company to insure with. Luckily, once I hit 25, my crazy rates went away.

Please don’t get just the state minimums on liability. In KS, they only require $25k, which is almost pointless when almost every vehicle out there is worth more than that. Sending someone to the ER would also cost more than $25k. Even with high comp/collision insurance rates, you should still be able to get $100-500k in liability for affordable rates.

Good luck with your insurance adventures!

That's a good point, keeping the liability makes sense. I was thinking more in terms of coverage for my property.

There are some pretty good rates on umbrella policies out there as well.

I think I've told this anecdote before but when I lived in the Bay Area is came across body shop/auto repair place that had 20-30 (mainly Teslas) all parked up. To look at them, they had small dings on them but didn't look anything bad. I've seen worse cars still on the roads.

I asked a dude there what the deal was with all these cars and he told me they were ALL insurance write offs. Total write off i.e. too expensive to repair.

Now to me a right off is - can't be driven. Total wreck. I couldn't belive it. These cars looked fine and he said 95% could be driven off the lot right now. That's where your premiums have gone folks.

So when someone says "buy an EV, save $ on gas" .... guess what ...

Dayam! Are the $10000+ rates just for car insurance?
It almost makes sense just to rent a car from Avis or something. $700 a month.
Yes all quotes were auto only. My renewal with Safeco contains a HO policy discount which the others don’t. The AAA quote was ridiculous—it’s the kind of bid you’d receive from a home reno job where contractor isn’t interested in your business.

I’m paying 18k year. Looked at other options and they were worse. I have a teenage driver and...
When I added my teen driver to my Tesla insurance, my monthly insurance premium increased by $0 to add her. Yes, $0. Later, adding her car onto my policy made the cost increase 2x. This is to be expected, since my vehicle count was 2x. Tesla insurance is available in Oregon: https://www.tesla.com/support/insurance/what-is-tesla-insurance

Regarding insurance, I pay only around $250 with Progressive for 6 months full coverage for my 2024 guad large R1t. In Arizona. Clean accident history. Retired, multivehicle discount. I deferred on the glass coverage as it would have near doubled the cost. I was happily surprised as I was expecting to pay much more. Hopefully won't see a big jump when I renew.
Can you screenshot that $250 for 6 month Progressive (like the original poster did)? I'm double that with all the same discounts....I need some negotiating power.

I do not live in AZ but 250 for 6 months sounds crazy cheap to me. Liability on my motorcycle before I took it off the road 6 years ago was higher than that.

In CA I thought I was doing pretty good on my January renewal at 826 for 6 months. An umbrella policy requires elevated limits so I went with a 2k deductible to offset some of that cost.

I am old, have a clean record, multi-policy discounts, and have had the same insurance broker for 38 years, must have something to do with the rates I am getting.

Honestly the numbers I see people quoting in this thread are insane, if I saw those numbers I would probably go the self insured route here in California.

Have 3 vehicles here in CO with 3 drivers. Clean records, no claims except small hail on R1T. $3300/6mos with Allstate, $4100/yr for home. All quotes were over 10k/yr for just cars so we stick with Allstate for now as we have for past 10yrs. My son stationed on Oahu with 23 Frontier Pro4x and 21yrs old. High coverage with Allstate is $725/6mo, but if I insure him in CO with Allstate on same coverage's and vehicle, he is $2300/6months. Same kid, car, and insurance company.

We are know for weed here in CO, pretty sure insurance companies are on something else.
