saw that last week. yikes! looks it is had the 20 AT tires but as you noted, you'd need snow tires or a more experienced driver to reduce chance of that. on top of that, the stock 20" pirellis are not even Three Peak Mountain Snowflake rated

They are, but they're absolutely terrible on dusted icy roads. This video is how I felt in Idaho when I thought we were gonna eat the barrier going under 15.

My truck sees 95% pavement, 4% gravel/off-road, and 1% icy/snowy. Having the wrong tires for 99% won't kill you or others, just make things less convenient. That 1% can do some real damage.

Yikes. That looks like an R2 chain environment for the area.

When it's that bad, CHP has chain control set up as a gate, I don't think you can just drive through, right?

So glad I got Nokian‘s on my R1T TriMax. Have already successfully navigated a snowy Berthoud pass with them. Next up is Rabbit Ears this Thursday!
I run blizzak lt November to April because I am a somewhat frequent skier road tripper. You still need to be careful but snow tires help so much.

what convinced me to get snows was a YouTube video showing all types of cars on a hockey rink with and without snows. Snows were more important than type of transmission etc.

That doesn't look overly snowy and slippery to me but I drive in the snow all the time. Have not had any problems with the stock 20-inch ATs in snow. Obviously dedicated snow tires would be better, but most AT tires are not completely horrible in the snow. The video does not show how the driver started the spin, but probably not driving safely for the conditions or ice underneath.

Rivians, especially quads, have poor lateral traction, and because regen doesn't have antilock brake capability, one can spin out that way, too. I really want Rivian to add antilock brake capability to regen. Snow mode is not a solution, it is an ass-covering hack.

I agree, they help, but they're not miracle workers. I have Nokian snow tires on my R1S and have spun it out in fresh snow in a roundabout.
