We've took delivery of our Tri last Wednesday and I'm really disappointed at the charging speed. Today should have been perfect conditions for charging. 65 degrees outside. I was in conserve mode on interstate going 75mph and preconditioned on the way to the supercharger.

Plugged in around 32% and it ramped to 204kw which is great and shortly thereafter dropped to 138kw and held there until I unplugged at 45% (was at 139kw). Tried a different charger and it would only ramp up to 138kw at 45%. Not happy.

The Gen2 Dual Max I demoed for several days charged much better.

Rivian should have disclosed the charging speed difference between the Dual Max and Tri Max. Pathetic for a 112k car. Had I known would have saved a ton of $$$ and bought a Dual Max.

There isn't a charging speed difference AFAIK. One station and one charging session isn't enough to draw a valid conclusion from. Especially considering all the people who have tested it already and not said the same thing.

Yes definitely one of the weak spots of the Rivians in general. 10-50% on Gen 1 is ok, but then it drops off considerably too.

That’s a pretty small sample size to make a conclusion ?

I hope you are right. But I tested the Dual Max demo and the Tri Max demo at the same supercharger. Service menu showed it putting out the proper 500 amps. Both were in the mid 30 temps and preconditioned..

Today was 65 degrees at same chargers giving 500 amps in our new Tri and the results were similar to the Tri demo. Motor Trend noticed a difference as well.

I'm fine if Rivian just hasn't tweaked the Tri yet but if this continues I'm going to be pissed. We bought this for road trips.

Going to find out at the beginning of March. Taking a long trip to Montana with a mix of RAN and SCs.

Highly recommend getting a HomeAssistant instance connected to your Rivian. It logs all data in near realtime in your personal instance and not somebody else’s cloud.
Here is an example: last Tesla supercharger session at our local IKEA. Batterie was not preconditioned and peaks just before 50% SoC before it starts slowing.
2023 R1T Quad with 130 kWh battery pack.
Any charging session can be looked at like this and truly analyzed.
35%-70% took 1200 seconds (again w/o precon)

I have found that the Rivian max packs gets too hot when preconditioning in the winter, especially in winter when its mild. I have a "23 R1S Dual Perf Max and a Tri and they both do this. My trick when preconditioning, once battery temp gets to 75-80 disable charger destination in nav and if u still need it for directions select another address right next door so it doesn't continue preconditiong. If left unchecked the motors will transfer heat for it to get up to 95-100 degrees or more when mild in winter. Rivians don't have the best thermals, they only have 1 cooling plate so when the pack comes in toasty hot and when charging > 200 kw it will thermal throttle relatively quickly because the cooling can't keep up which is why you see that yo yo affect. When coming in 15-20 degrees cooler It sustains higher charging speeds deeper into the SOC; it still gets hot and thermal throttles but not as fast. I'm hopeful software will fix this; I've shared my experience with my Atlanta experience space and SC and they said this is being looked into on a future update.

I'm sure my R1t is the same, but I only care about the time it takes. I plug in at Bucees @ 20-30% with the family, use the restrooms and bring food back to the car. I dispose of the trash and we're at 70+% (251+ miles another 4 hours) and we leave..

That's perfectly acceptable for me on roadtrips and really couldn't ask for more. We're taking our Model Y on its first trip to Nashville, so I'll report on that, but feels like it will be similar except SC is free until April.

Try a 350kw from EVGO or EA, I have seen much better numbers from those compared to some of the Teslas. Not sure it is the car. Yes R1's could charge better, be 800v architecture etc etc, but 138kw isn't terrible, I normally am close to 200 at that state of charge.

You won’t get optimal charging from Superchargers, trust me. Mediocre at best. Try RANs or the latest EVGo and even EA stations. You’ll get much better curves
Thanks. No RANs anywhere near us but we will be using 4 of them on our trip.

I'm still skeptical that something is up with the Tri vs the MAX. Here are my notes from the G2 Dual Max Performance we demoed for several days.

Oh God. I can't watch that video again. Did you notice in previous update release notes that they kissed Kyle's ass.
If I'm honest, I didn't watch it either.

And no - I can't handle watching the interplay between OEMs and Influencers. My gag reflex is too weak.
