Im just meandering through their new gear and stumble upon their “climbing shorts,” (Salathe?) $215?!?!?!!! Then some board shorts for $150! They’re not making arcteryx level clothes here. Do these shorts somehow imbue you with the ability to lead 5.12? Will the board shorts make you a better surfer? I am a professed Rivian Fan boy, but WTH?

You know just because it's there, doesn't mean you have to buy it and cry about the price? Every premium car brand has overpriced merch. Example, look at the e-Bikes some of the brands are selling. A hardtail going for twice what a nice dual suspension e-Bike would cost [from an actual bicycle brand]. Nothing new and not a business practice that is exclusive to Rivian.

sure if you buy Patagonia’s stuff but you could buy 2-3 shorts from Hand up, yeti or club ride. No one needs a $215 pair of climbing shorts. There’s literally nothing they could do that value pack of “sport shorts” from wally-world couldn’t do just as well.

Dude I wear riding shorts bought from Amazon for $26 a pop.

Never understood why people spend $100s on something that, while neat and probably look nice, will disintegrate after a few crashes.

I bought the bomber jacket. It was a size large, but was too small for a young boy. It was also not very good quality for the price. I returned it. I will never buy any of the Rivian clothing again.

I can’t vouch for the bomber jacket, because I never bought one, but I do have a lot of Rivian clothing and I have to say that overall the quality is very good (especially the sweatshirts). High priced, high quality.

If it’s the one with the small compass logo, I’m 97% sure it’s an American Giant sweater in which case their pricing is right on. I’ve got two of these rivian sweaters and one from American Giant. They are expensive but they are great and are still in great shape after dozens of times through the wash.

Same story with the tshirts they used to sell in like five colors with the small compass logo. Those also feel like the plain tees from American Giant and they are/were also expensive but also a super solid product that lasts forever.

Love American Giant. I have a hoodie from them and it's the most comfortable hoodie I've ever had.

BMW has a sweat jacket for $104. Who would pay that for a sweat jacket? Not me.

I don't know about Rivian, but I know first hand a lot of companies big and small these days are using a third party fulfillment company for their merchandise so they don't have to deal with the overhead costs of fulfilling an order. At one of my companies, I get contacted at least once a month by a fulfillment company wanting to do our stuff for us. It increases the cost to the consumer.

Some stuff is expensive because they know it will be low volume and therefore it is made to order, such as some embroidered logo clothing, and even some "looks expensive" dye sublimation clothing is now direct printed to order. Other stuff is expensive because they want it to be expensive. The marketing folks think it sends a message of premium brand and exclusivity, knowing there will be a WTF reaction by some. It actually boosts sales of the lower cost items by making lower cost items seem like a better value.

Im not going to disagree with anything your saying because it appears you have some experience in this field. That said, i buy uniforms for my crew at work that is resilient, comfortable, looks good and purely by luck is printed and / or embroidered locally. Above all its a fraction of these prices. I have a sweatshirt thats comfy, manages truck grime and seems to shrug off emergency situations and fluids like a champ. At 1/4-1/2 the price of this stuff.
