Haven’t really taken it too far on the road yet but this definitely isn’t a localized problem. It’s pretty much consensus experience on this forum and with the other Rivian owners I know. The ADAS system is far behind Tesla, Ford, GM for sure.. I haven’t used the Volvo/Polestar EVs yet but their ICE ADAS is solid so can’t imagine Rivian being better.

Everything about it is bad.. even when it’s working it’s far less stable than my Bluecruise car, has far fewer mapped roads and the sensors have less reliability/tolerance. Even its audio signals are bad - minor alerts are so jarring you would think a nuclear missile was incoming.
Since we are using anecdotes as evidence I’ve been on this forum a long time and most of the people who’ve taken long road trips have a closer experience to mine than yours.

Just going to have to agree to disagree then.. like I said, I’m not comparing the Rivian to nothing - I’m comparing it to Bluecruise in a Mach-E. Not even Tesla FSD. Bluecruise blows it out of the water and if you can find a review on the entire internet that says otherwise I’ll gladly read it.

Now you're shifting the goalposts. You started out saying it was so bad you can't go more than 8 miles without it failing. Now the complaint is "It's not as good as bluecruise". I never said it was, I said your claim of not being able to go more than 8 miles is regional or exaggerated.

My “goalpost” is it being a good system.. it is not. Bluecruise is my example of a baseline “good” but not class leading system. Rivian is far away from being even Bluecruise level let alone class leading system- and that’s despite having MUCH better hardware already.

Of course not being able to go 8 miles is regional - Driver+ only works on mapped roads so EVERY experience is regional by pure definition. Which is why I said the system also isn’t good even when it’s engaged.

Everyone should know that the Rivian system isn't as good as Ford's. That's not news, Rivian hasn't released their hands off system yet. It is beyond me why people buy the car thinking that is the standard when we should all know Rivian doesn't have that yet.

To clarify - I’m not talking about handsfree vs non-handsfree. I’m not talking about FSD vs non-FSD. In talking about comparing the functionality that Rivian DOES have to others. It’s simply not good. I love the car but the ADAS sucks

I have more random intermittent sensor errors/alerts (making driver+ instantly unavailable) in 3 months in my Rivian than I’ve had in any other car ever. I’ve done soft and hard resets more than I have in years of owning a Mach-E. The software stack at large simply isn’t stable enough.

And when it’s engaged, it gets disengaged much more, has far less smooth braking, doesn’t deal with curves as well, incorrectly identifies overpasses as tunnels and throws nuclear alerts, is extremely sensitive and susceptible to losing sight of even slightly faded lane markers, has more gaps in its road mapping around me, no resume feature for stop and go, has very limited functionality at non-highway speeds, etc.

It’s not just a difference in functionality - it isn’t very good at the functions it DOES have. So circling back to the title of this thread - my opinion is that they need to be throwing every resource they have into getting basic ADAS functional before saying a word about Level 3 autonomy

Yesterday I had a 6 Hour Dr. across I-10. It is simply amazing and amusingly sad how many times it disengaged or told me that I simply could not use it on this road. On I-10. Complete garbage. The exact same route I had driven dozens of times in a Tesla with nearly 0 interventions.

For anecdotal evidence.

I use it on I-90, I-290, and highway 5 here around Buffalo all the time. Rarely disengages. I've also driven the I-90/I-71 corridor between Louisville and Buffalo a number of time with, what I would consider, exceptionally good results. Hours of time with it engaged on end, and only a few false disengages.

I think it's a fine and perfectly serviceable system. Hope they don't change a thing.

So odd how different everyone’s experience is, I’ve driven I-10 from SoCal to FL several times, this is just not my experience.

Just curious is this in the more around the cities? I only use it in the open areas between the cities.

This has been my experience as well. I have a very hard time understanding how anyone is driving hours without interventions. Maybe ours are broken. I've driven I-5 up and down the West Coast along with 15 and 70 throughout the West and maybe there are a few sections you could drive half an hour without an intervention but hours? No way, not even close. At least not in my R1T.

They could make good on their original promises and upgrade Gen 1 vehicles to Gen 2 ADAS hardware like Tesla did. I mean, that would be the right thing to do. Not just say "oh well, tough luck..."
I think avoiding this sort of expectation is exactly why they didn't charge you for it up front. Tesla HAD TO deliver these upgrades (at great cost) because when I purchased my Model 3 (in Jan 2018) there was an explicit line-item for "full self driving" for which I paid thousands of dollars. IMHO, as a new company, launching their first vehicle...it was the right move to not sign themselves up for obligations that may very well have led them to bankruptcy. When they originally talked about hands-off autonomy the website also foretasted vehicles with dual front-facing Lidar which of course did not happen.

The opposite; more in the open areas. I use driving assist any time it's possible (and effective/safe). Which with the Tesla was 98% of my driving since it worked nearly everywhere.

I’m going to Milwaukee next weekend. I’m gonna tally it for everyone.
