Ive been contemplating this for the last year. Am a bit apprehensive about the mirror set up because I'm great at breaking things and did not want to take a chance on breaking the windshield. I also did not want to tap the fuse box and cause issues there.

The centre console usb-c power source seemed to be the easiest. I got an extension and hid the wire to the left of the dash. It works well for my needs.

I hard wired a Uniden R8 with mirror tap a couple of days ago thanks to the great instructions and pictures in his thread. I tried a while ago with some smaller trim removal tools, but the cover was on too firmly for the leverage available. I bought a kit with various longer tools (~6”) and it went quite quickly. I used an adhesive mount and just routed the wire out of the existing gap along the front trim edge.

The taps don’t have to move much to lose contact. My kit came with thick and thin end pins. I found the thick pins too large to fit, but the thin ones aren’t as tight as I’d prefer. I used electrical tape as previously posted to hold things in place - a zip tie kept resulting in an intermittent connection for some reason.

The trim cover went back on far more easily than it came off. Hopefully it stays in place!

Thanks again for the pioneer work on this.

For those who use the Mirror Tap, would you be interested in a mount like this so that you don't have to attach to the windshield? I normally would go with the blendmount route, but it seems like its a crapshoot if one will actually fit and allow the rear view mirror to be adjusted.

I did a mirror tap for my Escort 360 and I’d be very interested in a mount like this. Sign me up!

That type of mount is commonly available and sometimes even included with the detectors. I have a few different ones in that style.

Funny. I saw this thread in the “Latest Posts” and my first thought was “people still use radar detectors?”. I mean…with most highways having speed limits of 70 (or 80 if in the southwest…), I’m wondering how fast you drive that you actually need one? Especially in a vehicle that weighs over 7,000lbs.

I guess the fact that they’re illegal in VA has kept them off my…radar…for a few decades might also explain it, but still. Didn’t realize they were still a thing.

lol… some great lines in that movie:

“Do the letters ’F-O’ mean anything to you?”

“There ain’t no way, no way, that you come from my loins! Soon as I get home, I’m gonna punch your mamma in the mouth”

You have a great profile name here, which made me wonder why you don't have a picture to go with it. And then I remembered this great line:

"All right, you look like a future pedophile in this picture, number 1. Number 2, it doesn't even have a first name, it just says McLovin!"

Fixed it. I thought I’d done it a while ago, but probably never hit “save”…

Now there’s only one thing that the guy in that picture still needs: radar detector.

If you don’t hear tree falling, does that mean tree harvesting is no longer a thing in the world? That to me is a strange assumption to make. While detectors are not effective against laser (detects signal but doesn't make any difference if the laser is aimed at you), it's still better than driving completely blind—because it isn't always laser that is in use. And in places where flow of traffic is above the limit (like SoCal) you'd be the one at risk of causing accident sticking to the limit.

After getting a ticket that included a court summons years ago, I got back on the radar detector train.

Cop was going same direction as me a few cars up on a two lane rural highway. Speed limit 65 and he had rear facing radar and clocked me while PASSING slower cars. Yes I like to floor it when passing people as to not lollygag in a lane not meant for my direction! Got me at 92 while passing ?‍♂
