First off it wasn't FSD. He tried to engage autopilot, a very old build at that. This video was sponsored by a LiDAR company. Don't believe everything you see/read on the internet.

That video is full of nefarious behavior. Driving over a double solid yellow line and hitting a child and claiming the car is on "autopilot."

How do you engage autopilot driving over a double solid line?

Do you know which LiDAR company? Also, why would it matter if LiDAR, radar or other color sensor is company is doing the testing?

Radar and LiDAR are active illuminators (i.e., emitting signals in their respective wavelengths that triggers the sensor's receiver(s)) and they operate at different wavelengths than color cameras). Having multimodal sense functions seems to me a good idea. Like humans with eyes, ears, touch, smell, etc., multimodal sensors will enable full vehicle autonomy and safety.

Of course, costs need to come down.

My Tesla has FSD and Autopilot, but AFAIK I'm at the mercy of Tesla for whatever version is running on the car. So IMHO, unless he spent the last 12 months declining software updates in preparation for this test, it's a fair take to run whatever software Tesla chose for the vehicle.

No I don't remember the name. If you go and look at the video it is in there, funny enough the youtuber now claims the video was not sponsored... after all of the backlash. I don't believe the guy for a second after watching what he was doing.

The LiDAR company was there, with one of their vehicles. They drove with the youtuber.

That doesn't mean that he received payment for doing the video. It also doesn't mean that the LiDAR company contributed to the costs of production, besides bringing their product.

You can believe what you want, that is your prerogative.

  • Autopilot was clearly on.
  • Autopilot also turned itself off just before impact. This is not new. NHTSA said this is a real thing.
  • Whether the video was sponsored or not is irrelevant if the experiment was real and transparent. What they said happened, happened.
  • If Tesla wanted to prove Autopilot and FSD are as safe as they and their defenders claim, they could release the raw data. They won't do that.
Once again here we are:

The FTC has numerous rules on promotions and disclosures for social media and influencers. Youtube, which is subject to this as a platform, does as well. As do other countries, including the EU. And these cover more than just paid promos, but also product placement and in-kind contributions.

Mark Rober has previously featured technologies and companies in non-sponsored videos (e.g., Zipline). He's also such a massive YT personality that he's absolutely "on the radar" of what these rules are intended to capture. If he's making clear statements about a piece being "not promoted," he's had to do more work any of us here have done in determining he fits within the rules. I think it's good to be both skeptical, and to understand the burden of proof; if you think he's outright lying and it was in fact a sponsored piece, I'd love to see something to back that up.

You don't believe someone would be willing to do this, on their own money, to discredit Tesla's "Vision only" systems?

I'll wait to see the repeat of this test where the system doesn't fail in the same way.
