I know a handful of wealthy oligarch-class MAGA have been doing performative purchases to demonstrate loyalty to President Musk but hard to imagine this happening in any meaningful volume to offset catastrophic sales volume losses in every market around the world.

I agree, but I am truly saddened that individuals are being punished by these political whack jobs. Many Tesla owners originally purchased their vehicles to demonstrate their support for environmental issues. Now, all of a sudden, they are under attack from persons of their own ilk. Damaging property to voice political opinion is never okay and is criminal behavior.

Nobody ever damaged Model T's in response to Henry Ford's avid Antisemitism and admiration of Adolph Hiltler.

I haven’t seen any evidence on whether this popular defense of Musk is actually true or not, but even still it’s not a very apt comparison.

Musk has expressed his terrible personal views like that for years and no one cared.

It’s several orders of magnitude worse, now, using his vast personal fortune (obtained largely thanks to government subsidy) to actively purchase government officials, distribute false and hateful information, and dismantle our Constitutional order.

But hey, SpaceX will mysteriously get new government contracts.

If Ford had taken over the government I think he’d be similarly reviled.

Only a handful were sold in the 1940's, and some US military personnel imported their own that they "acquired" from the factory after the allies defeated Hitler, but actual Beetle sales to the US started circa 1950.

WWII ended Sept 1945, Beetle sales to the US started 4.5 short years after the war ended. Just for reference, Covid 19 started 5 years ago now and we all still remember that (unfortunately). From what I read, there was some resistance to the Beetle in the beginning because it was a German product and they were being sold shortly after WWII ended, but no one ever vandalized them because of their origin.

They gave Boeing a chance... they were years late, hugely over budget and delivered an inferior product compared to what SpaceX delivered.
If there was any other US aerospace manufacturer who had a working human rated launch/delivery platform there would be competition, but for now no one has that so if we don't want to depend on the Russians for rides up the the ISS, we have to pay SpaceX, we don't have any other options for manned spaceflight currently.

What’s happening to Tesla is sad. Musk needs to resign from Tesla unfortunately I don’t see any other way. When resale starts crashing…and it will if this trend continues…dealers won’t touch them on trade or they will be offering well well below wholesale.

Destroying property is not ok. Yes they are having an impact on Musks net worth but it’s really hurting Tesla employees and owners which is very saddening.

Even without the criminal behavior of a few misguided souls, I believe we'd be seeing a collapse of the used Tesla market (though probably not the rise in insurance rates). This can and will hurt Elon and more generally Tesla shareholders and employees in that those looking at buying new will probably also consider reseal values. Also, some who were on the fence deciding between new and used may decide there are better deals on used Teslas. So, no matter what, a collapse of the used market hurts Tesla and those employed and/or invested in it.

At some point, if this slide continues, I expect the Tesla board may force Elon out. It's just a matter of damage control. He only owned 12.8% of the company as of 2024, they can vote him out.

Tesla’s Board is made of Musk puppets. It is not an independant Board and he will survive as long as he wants. May be some day he will realize by himself he should step down, even is it’s only an illusion…

…to learn more about Rivian and its competitors in the EV market. Tesla downfall is probably good for Rivian even though it’s not positive for the EV market. May be it will help the OEM manufacturers to catch up as they are still way behind Rivian and Tesla.
