I just did a trip from Austin Texas to the Ozarks. I had heard that if you charger a lot, you can save money with a Tesla membership. So I signed up. My first 2 charges as I used the Tesla App, it threw an error. But I received an email from Rivian giving my charges and charging stats. After the 2nd email, I called Rivian. Support said that Rivian takes over when using the Tesla chargers and a membership is worthless since all charges are through Rivian (at a higher cost! )

Anyone else ever hear this from Rivian? Is there a way around this?

It should work, I did 35 SC sessions on my last trip and only in Van Horn, TX could I not get the app to start a session. I just let Rivian do that one.

My process, click charge here at the location, enter the pedestal number, click start charging, plug into the adapter, plug into the Rivian.

Definately worth it on a trip as the savings on average is around .10 a kWh so 2 charges of 65 kWh pays the 13.00.

First, remove your billing info from your Rivian account to prevent it charging through Rivian while you troubleshoot the Tesla app.

Most likely there is a billing issue with the Tesla app. You should see a pre authorization from Tesla for $25 on your credit card if the session is initiated successfully on Tesla.

So check your billing address and credit card in the Tesla app to make sure the charge is going through. Don’t add a CC back to Rivian until you get the Tesla app working.

hope this helps.

If anyone does this, they'll be unable to use RAN stations.

Operator error. If you want the lower rate that one gets by paying for the membership, you have to start the session via the Tesla app. and have a credit card saved to the app (which you already do for the membership). Rivian has nothing to do with it. For me, it makes financial sense if I use a supercharger 2x per month. Even if I don’t, I keep it for convenience….

Right. I am only suggesting it for a short time to get the billing working through the Tesla app. Once the Tesla app is working it should be added back. I’m not suggesting that as a permanent solution.

it sounds like a billing issue with Tesla hence my recommendation to troubleshoot in this way.

Worthless? You don't need to know algebra to figure out how many sessions it takes to break even on the $12.99 monthly membership fee. And there are countless threads discussing and spelling out the ins and outs of Supercharger use. Maybe read some of them, like this one, before jumping to conclusions.

you have to start the charging session via the Tesla app, input location and stall, then plug-in to your Rivian.
No, that didn’t work. First 2 started with the Tesla App. Showed an error, but the Tesla app showed charging, so I thought I was good. But then received statements from Rivian.

No, that’s what I did and it didn’t work. First 2 times started with Tesla App. (Actually plugged in first. Oops)

Or maybe you can go back to school and learn to read? I clearly stated that I signed up with Tesla and attempted to use the app. I also stated that support said I could not use the Tesla membership.

So not sure Algebra comes into play, but good try at throwing baseless accusations.

Sounds like a good idea. Also going to call Tesla and see what they have to say about what Rivian support said.

So you know everything and don’t need any help then?

Ahh, I see a sequence difference.

I did everything like you said, except the difference was I plugged in first, then went through all the Tesla App stuff. I think by the time I did the Tesla work, Rivian had taken over. Thanks for the explanation, that was probably the issue!
