Another take on the recent IPO and upcoming developments for Rivian:

Rivian Adds Stand-Alone Battery Plant to Post-IPO To-Do List

(Bloomberg) -- Fresh off a $12 billion initial public offering, Rivian Automotive Inc. is investing in a dizzying array of expansion projects, pursuing a site for a stand-alone battery factory in addition to new vehicle-assembly plants already planned.

The to-do list for the electric-vehicle maker will be funded in part by its IPO -- the sixth-largest in U.S. history. Rivian shares soared 22% Thursday in their second day of trading, creating a stock-market value of more than $100 billion. Two months after delivering its first pickups, largely to employees, Rivian now has a market valuation exceeding that of General Motors Co.

The stock rose 3.1% to $126.81 at 9:45 a.m. Friday in New York.

Rivian’s top investment priority is a second EV manufacturing facility in the U.S., according to people familiar with the matter, followed by a plant in Europe that would start building vehicles by the end of 2023. A site in the U.K. has been under consideration, along with other locations on the Continent, the people said, asking not to be named discussing private information. The cost of the Europe factory would be in the billions of dollars, they said.

Arizona, Michigan and Texas are among the states under consideration for the battery manufacturing site, some of the people said. Irvine, California-based Rivian currently assembles battery packs using cells from Samsung SDI Co. at the Normal, Illinois, factory where the automaker builds its R1T pickup.

No final decision has been made on any of the sites, the people said. New candidates for the second EV assembly plant in the U.S. have also emerged in recent weeks, some of the people said. Many states are vying for new battery plants as the auto industry shifts toward electrified vehicle lineups. Ford Motor Co. announced plans in September to spend $11.4 billion in Kentucky and Tennessee to build three battery factories and an EV facility.

The investments add some flesh to Rivian’s bare bones plans outlined in previous statements, filings and news reports. The company had held talks with Forth Worth, Texas, to invest $5 billion in an EV assembly plant, Bloomberg News reported in August. And in an Oct. 1 filing, Rivian disclosed its long-term ambitions about expanding in-house expertise in battery cell production -- without saying that included a stand-alone facility.

ā€˜Important Decisions’

Chief Executive Officer RJ Scaringe declined to comment Wednesday on the status of Rivian’s talks in Texas and in Europe, which he called ā€œpotential locations.ā€

ā€œThese are really important decisionsā€ Scaringe said in a Bloomberg Television interview. ā€œFor us it really comes down to looking at the ability to recruit an outstanding team to help drive and operate these facilities.ā€ Also important, he said, is access to its suppliers and logistic considerations for delivery of components.

Whatever the outcome, Rivian plans to spend heavily to boost its production capacity. The company said in a Nov. 5 regulatory filing it expects capital expenditures of about $8 billion through the end of 2023. Rivian forecast a ramp up in annual production to 200,000 units by that time and says it will be supply-constrained until new plants come online.

Rivian is taking a page out of Tesla Inc.’s playbook. Elon Musk’s company went through a similar growth story in recent years. It invested heavily in a new plant in Shanghai that now accounts for the majority of its EV output. Later this year, the EV market leader intends to started limited production at new factories in Austin, Texas, and Berlin.

In Europe, Rivian initially would seek to build battery-electric delivery vans ordered by Amazon.com Inc., one of its top strategic investors, and later start manufacturing its retail consumer-focused EVs, Bloomberg reported in February. Ahead of Rivian’s IPO this week, Amazon disclosed a 20% ownership interest in the automaker.

How long does it take to build a new factory in Europe? If they plan to start building vehicles by the end of 2023, I suspect we will have news about the two new factories by Q1 2022.

I think you're right. As a reference point, Tesla started construction on Giga Austin in July 2020 and should finish up by end of the year or early next. So, call it 18ish months, and that is a bigger factory than Rivian in planning. They started their final selection process with a few finalists in May of 2020.

Interestingly, wiki says they only received about $50m in tax incentives, whereas FT Worth approved $440m for Rivian....

I think there could be announcements as early as January with construction starting by end of the quarter.

Agree on your timing estimates. This drives good news and momentum to have regular major news of new plants and I expect by end of next year the two row SUV (R1C?) will be announced ready for 202 and the new factories. The article says 200000 by end of 2023 so they should easily get to 50000 run rate by end of next year

If they can figure out how to make solid state batteries to scale, we’ll all be very happy share holders?
Solid state has been the snake oil of the EV industry for the last 5 years. It's coming but not as soon as anybody would like.

That’s… not what snake oil means. Snake oil is pure fraud, not something that’s coming, but not as soon as many think. Cold fusion might be the better metaphor.

It's unlikely Rivian's battery plant will produce solid state batteries. SSB are not at the point where they can be mass produced and who knows when the point will be reached?

But, there's lots of room for growth in lithium-based batteries not only in terms of their chemistries but also in terms of form factor and packaging. Most importantly, Rivian's ability to grow and produce hundreds of thousands of vehicles is constrained by battery availability more than anything else.

Producing its own batteries while supplanting its needs with batteries bought from traditional battery suppliers is a key strategic move on Rivian's part. RJ, as always, is ahead of the curve.

Ahead of the curve? He’s on Elon’s coattails.
