I am finally ready to make the jump to EV. Looking at the Rs1 trimotor.
About once a week I take my dogs to a farm that is 75 miles away mostly highway driving.
So that is 150 miles round trip.
My concern is real world range of traveling 75-80 MPH on the highway or if I run into traffic, although unusual. I am hoping to be able to make this frequent trip
without stopping to charge. Would I have to charge to 100% the night before I make a trip like this? Would I still be able to perform this trip if I get the AT tires. I calculated if I charge the vehicle to 80%( as charging to 100% is bad for battery) and willing to run it down to 20 % that would give me a theoretical range 60% of the full range or 197 miles in the 329 rated AT tires trimotor? So if the trip is a Max of 150 miles would that be cutting close given the faster speed or real world driving environments?
I realize there is "conserve mode" but read that was not good for the tires?
I do drive my car on farms off road but nothing extreme, just dirt roads, grass and some minimal mud. I do live in the upper midwest where there is snow. Do you think the 22' tires could handle this type of use.
Finally my only other concern is the sound system has gotten some very nasty reviews. Curious are most of you satisfied after the software update?

You’ll be fine. If you’re worried the first few trips just charge to 100% the night prior to making the drive and you’ll have a huge margin of error to work with. Sitting at a constant 100% can be bad but simply charging to it and using it isn’t a problem.

I agree with @Thedude. Also note you will have the Portable Charger, which plugs into a normal 120v outlet. You don’t get much (~ 1% per hour), but assuming there’s an outlet you can access, you can get 12-14% overnight.

Took me a family trip or two to get comfortable, but now it's almost like road tripping with our ICE vehicles. Stops are more about conveniences and food than gas (or charging) and a 5-15minute review of your options makes everything easier.

I always have a charging backup and now you can look to see if chargers are available while driving, so makes hitting the primary or backup an easy decisions.

You will be fine. I did this with a quad motor all the time and just switched to a Tri-Motor. The extra range it offers would make this no problems at all.

We have a Quad R1T on AT tires and you’ll be fine at 85% charge on the large pack battery. (I know you’re looking at the tri motor) Always have an option or plan to hit a charger if needed. Look at PlugShare to locate L2 and L3 chargers.

There’s nothing wrong with charging to 100% at home on a L2 charger for road trips. We’ve done it many times.

As a data point, we have a low VIN LE R1T and have been on many road trips. Our battery capacity after 2.5 years is over 95%.

Stick it in conserve and don't worry again. I routinely make this trip as my Dad's house is approximately the same distance, and I don't even charge over 70% to make it there and back. It has never been a problem, even in winter.

Be very conservative the first time. Then consider being more confident as you gain experience.

Our R1S, which we bought first, is a Dual Max. The 141 kWh Max battery was an expensive upgrade, but it is paying off in extra convenience and confidence.

Whatever you choose, you'll be fine. Welcome to the EV and Rivian communities!

You'll be fine at 75mph. I've heard 65mph in conserve is the sweet spot, if you ever need to. You could juice up to 100% and drive around the city for 150 miles and get a rough idea of what it will be like.

I'm more interested why your dogs need a weekly trip to the countryside? Are they going to unwind from the stress of the city. All joking aside, love how much you care for your dogs. Cheers!

For 150mi roadtrip, I wouldn't even check charge first :)

In my R1T Gen1 Quad Motor Large (less efficient than Tri-motor and less battery capacity than MAX configuration) I can do 260mi with 100% battery at 80-85mph (assuming good weather conditions) in All-purpose mode. Maybe a bit more in Conserve.

I do Dallas-Austin, TX very frequently, it's 210mi from my house to my destination (office) and I normally arrive with 25-30% battery if I leave home with 100% :)

Get the Tri, enjoy your ride!

My dogs are border collies and they travel to the farm to sheep herd. It is difficult to find the right car as I have 3 dogs with 3 crates. Currently have a Land Rover lr4 that is 15 years old and is the perfect car space with just enough off road capability to keep me from getting stuck in snow or mud on an unpaved road. I have been lucky as far as Land rovers go that it is still around. Unfortunately they no longer make that vehicle . The R1s space wise with its flat cargo is perfect. Just have to decide which tires.
