It’s not going to change much if you use PAAK, other than being a better PAAK than what you have today, with WAAK as a bonus:

* using UWB to measure how close you are to the R1 (think AirTag precision location) so rather than using Bluetooth signal strength to guess if it’s time to unlock, it will have some better data to run off. This one’s also big in that it should mean that the army of folks who say ‘force quit the Rivian app on your phone at home’ will just vanish (good, as that was always a terrible solution - I just have it set to only proximity lock at home, which is fine but enough of this tangent for now)

* no longer using a proprietary and frankly rather odd handshake mechanism; part of the reason so many folks restart the app to get unlocking working in a quickish timeframe. (I spent a afternoon looking at it whist building a watch as key app before I got bored and wondered off…)

* able to use phone as NFC key when it’s battery is dead.

* it *should* also improve the response time to unlock as well - this one’s a little tenuous and based on my guesstimating.
Thank you for the explanation. I’m looking forward to this now.

Was excited. Not excited.

No different from holding your keycard to your gen1's driver handle, right? So you're not missing much. If you want additional convenience, don't mind spending a little $ and take some risk, you can convert one of your keycards to a ring. Yeah it's just as slow sometimes as the keycard or PAAK, but as least you're not fumbling your expensive phone or fishing a card out of your wallet. It's what I did and I don't even have proximity on anymore. Is it perfect? No. But it's fine.

Totally irrelevant, but I really think they should have put the compass logo instead of spelling out "Rivian"

Interesting a lot of Chinese EV companies are there too.

Rivian announced that this was coming when the Gen 2 came out: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20240606335706/en/Rivian-Introduces-Second-Generation-R1S-R1T

Note that on Apple's list, Rivian is still "coming soon". It's been over a year since Rivian's announcement.
Wassym actually acknowledged the existence of this feature for the first time since Gen 2 launch in a recent Twitter comment. Afaik there was absolutely NO official mention of the existence of this feature between those dates. So good to hear that it's actually on their radar again

Good to see this getting some standardization with electronic wallets and glad that Rivian is playing ball with this. I suppose I would be more excited but after 18 years of loyal iPhone (and mac and apple watch) usage, I think I am breaking up with Tim Cook's phones. Siri and the AI features suck so bad it is getting time to move on. I am waiting to see the Pixel X, but I think it is time.

Good news! Rivian already announced that it's also coming to Google wallet on Pixel devices

The hardware for this isn't in the Gen1 vehicles, from what I recall.
As others have confirmed, this is true. Also, sigh.

I'm not sure what the use of this for my daily driving as I just use PAAK. However being able to send someone a key would be helpful.
UWB works way better. Not a little better. A LOT better. And given how flaky PAAK is, this is going to be a big improvement.

Perhaps read the prior comments. It uses UWB and is far superior in security and reliability than PAAK.

It also makes it really easy to share the key with someone else, instead of having to create an entire profile.

To the person who has yet to ask the question/demand that Gen1 vehicles will be retrofitted at no cost because "I'm entitled, dammit!", the answer is no. ;)

I'm sure they'd love to swap for the squeaky door handle that has the UWB chip ;)
