So I just completed a road trip yesterday that was only 300 miles round-trip. Today running some errands on local highways and driving and all of a sudden I get a series of errors, windshield wiper control fault, brake light not working, power steering reduced, SOS not working, front camera off front sensors off, driver assistance unavailable, tire pressure monitor not working. I’m going about 60 miles an hour. I lose power and power brakes. I’m able to steer the car to the shoulder and with a lot of force on the brakes stop. Now I’m stuck on the shoulder. RIVIANā€˜s gonna tow it to the service center but the car thinks it’s in a drive mode still cause but it won’t shift in Park. Control reset won’t work. The service provider tried to walk me through some things to try to get it to go into Park like opening the door, but that didn’t do anything either. The wipers are running.
It’s kind of annoying too because it’s gonna sit at the service center with the wipers running and I’m not even sure about locking or even ability to unlock it from the outside

hey but the app says all systems go.

Annoying thing is, I can’t put it into Park so I can’t do a soft reset or a hard reset.
currently, I’m still waiting on the side of the highway waiting for a tow truck with skates to tow it to the service center.

I have 19,000 miles. Never had the battery replaced. The car was at the service center about two months ago to tighten some wheel parts in a soft recall. They checked it out and did not say anything.

I agree with the others this sounds like a 12v failure. I just crossed 22k miles with my original and I am getting nervous about it failing too. I hope yours is something simple like that and not a larger problem!

There was someone else that posted a similar incident that happened. That’s scary as hell

Odd that opening the door doesn't force it into park. What about lifting your weight off the seat? Some people, those that pull trailers and have to shift their weight to look behind them, often complain of the vehicle shifting to park when they lift their butt off the seats.

I was stranded on the highway for over three hours waiting for the proper tow truck and definitely got out of my car many times. Service agents said they never heard of a situation from the wipers stayed on as well. I’ll be very interested to see what the problem is.

i suspect a faulty control module, had some similar issues happen with wipers and blinkers flashing. could get out of car and it was drivable but doors wouldn't lock. and wipers and flashers wouldn't stop . ended up being loose connection to the control module.

sucks you where stranded in the vehicle

If the 12 V battery is the cause, and why, I suppose it makes sense why Rivian proactively decided to replace the 12 V battery on my Gen 1 R1S at 16 months and less than 7k miles during the 7.5k service visit two weeks ago. Surprised Rivian did not do this for OP.

No meaningful update but I will let everyone know when I find out.

Rivian for a while told me that only vehicles within a certain VIN range were affected by the "bad batch of batteries." I've had my vehicle in for various issues and they told me nope your vehicle isn't on the battery VIN range. Then last week I got the 12V warning (red icon instead of yellow) and was able to get the battery changed the next day with an urgent appt at Costa Mesa. Was told "bad batch of batteries" but since this is happening with Gen2's as well, I feel it is more to do with the BMS draining these tiny 12V to the point where they become unchargeable. And Rivian handicapped themselves by squeezing a tiny battery into a tiny space so they can't increase the battery size or capacity. Or maybe they really did buy 200,000 12V batteries and need to use them all up before they change over to a lithium 12V battery like Tesla did.

Surprised you didnt get the voluntary replacement that Rivian seems to be doing.
