One explanation could be a retreat to an Alexa-powered solution (e.g. install a works-with-Alexa opener and then program an Alexa routine to open based on the vehicle arriving/departing or just with voice command). Are we sure this is still going to even be a supported feature? That was just for one specific set of components though. The FCC didn't release everything to the public. We didn't, for example, see documents for things like the radar or sonar, which I have to imagine also require certification.I checked the fcc post we had awhile back and it doesn't look like anything in that range.
HomeKit isn't the issue here. HomeLink is... HomeKit Overview - Apple Developer VS. HomeLinkFeeling like another money grab, like no CarPlay. Want to be able to open your garage? Pay for our monthly service so your car has internet service.
… Also another issue that can be avoided if they add CarPlay, since it opens HomeKit garage door openers as standard.
Or, you can... I dunno... just use one of these... and apply a slight amount of pressure with your finger tip to a slightly different device (or if you have the geo activated Homelink like the Tesla... have to move your arm AND press a button with your finger).Feeling like another money grab, like no CarPlay. He's saying if you have a HomeKit-enabled garage door it could be opened through CarPlay (something I use currently).HomeKit isn't the issue here. HomeLink is... HomeKit Overview - Apple Developer VS. HomeLink
You can, sure, but it's another step backwards. There's a reason most manufacturers include HomeLink. These visor warts are an eyesore and don't always stay in place.Or, you can... Stick one of those on my visor, suction cup the phone to my windshield, run a charging cable from the cigarette lighter… can’t wait to find out other sweet Rivian features await me. Maybe they can figure out a way to make the rain sensing wipers dependent on their subscription service, too, so I can go back to manually controlling wiper speed.Or, you can... Right, but Alexa is built in so using smart home services was a non-issue IMO.He's saying if you have a HomeKit-enabled garage door it could be opened through CarPlay (something I use currently).
I also use my HomeLink and like having the option to use either.
Exactly, my home garage door opener leverages Homelink, Alexa, and Google Home/Nest.Right, but Alexa is built in so using smart home services was a non-issue IMO.
His point is that to use Alexa (or whatever solution Rivian provides) will likely require a data plan tied to the vehicle. With HomeKit it uses the data plan already on your phone.Right, but Alexa is built in so using smart home services was a non-issue IMO.
That's great. A lot of folks don't have smart garage door openers or have gates that don't use this technology and need an RF-based solution. The fact Rivian isn't providing a solution for these issues that people have come to expect out of $70k+ vehicles is concerning.Exactly, my home garage door opener leverages Homelink, Alexa, and Google Home/Nest.
...and my garage door opener remote.
Some might consider an integrated RF remote to be table stakes. That's great. A lot of people live in areas without cell phone service. Anything other than RF won't work at all. That's great.
