From TheDrive: https://www.thedrive.com/news/heres...turn-on-the-first-generation-r1t-and-r1s-quad

TLDR:
  • Bosch motors are water cooled.
  • Rivian's in-house motors are oil cooled.
  • "Ultimately, Rivian’s Chief Software Officer Wassym Bensaid told The Drive that 'we don’t have the same level of control on gen-one Quad' to activate the feature. Left unsaid is the fact that they also seem more confident in their bespoke motors to handle the stress, since Kick Turn can be activated at forward speeds up to 15 mph."

There was also something related to motor-delay and zonal architecture mentioned in that article as the reason why kick turn wasn’t viable on gen 1.

I’m not sure that we couldn’t have a Gen 1 version of the RAD tuner thingy though.

All this is just marketing speak for we didn't want to spend the effort to retrofit and diminish the specialness of the new quad. Same with RAD and the new conserve mode none of it really seems technically unfeasible with Gen1 just that they probably do not want to spend effort to retrofit or just might do so in the future but don't want to say anything now to protect the new quad launch.

The way I see it, I don't want the additional complexity. Plus, you can see in forums that most people don't even know how to use audio EQ. And, they got our money already. The development cost required of gen 1, if they were to offer it as part of a OTA update, doesn't seem like how one would operate a [profitable] business. And then there's the aforementioned technical limitation: lack of control over the Bosch motors. Plus, if gen 1 owners had a path to all these upgrades, there'd be no motivation to upgrade to newer. No up-sell.

It would be cool to get some kind of trail turn for Gen 1, like on the Bronco where it just drags the inside rear wheel. Kick turn seems kind of like a gimmick for rally driving and too wild to actually use on a narrow trail
Kyle showed it in action on a trail at a hairpin turn, not in rally conditions.

Yeah, it's fair to say it's "a bit wild" for sure, and it digs up ruts. But it also looks to be quite controllable, You're not spinning a wheel and hoping to point in the right way, you're activating it in real-time and pretty precisely controlling the orientation of the vehicle. It seems way more usable than I would have first imagined, even while the truck is in motion!

As a mild off-roader, I can say the tank turn feature is pretty useless. Unless you're doing it in a soft sandy or muddy area, most trails are pretty darn rocky. I do pretty easy trails and even then I can imagine all 4 tires blowing out before the turn is complete on all the sharp rocks haha.

Blah blah blah, can get at least get launch control??
Unless launch control is a simple "hold brake + stand on gas pedal and let go" process, that's also pretty much useless for your every day. With an EV, simply stomping on the gas pedal is enough.

If you need to spend 30 seconds lowering the car, prepping the battery, etc nobody is ever doing to do it. I had a Model S and I used launch control twice. It was basically the same as stomping the gas.

Just my opinion.

I just want the cool graphics and timing you get.

I have to second @shamoo on this one. I HAVE launch control on my tri and I’ve used it twice. It’s very neat to see, but after you do it a couple times it loses utility

+1. Lowering the car and waiting for it to get it into "cheetah stance" is useless. Quite honestly, even tapping to get to the drive mode screen, swiping right to get to the mode selector, and selecting "Sport Mode" is already a couple of steps too many to bother with at a stop light. Especially when you take into account the time you need to establish eye contact with the other driver, point at them, and turn the point into a thumbs down, as is the courtesy.

Tank Turm means I'm sorry for all the divots in the paint the tires kick on to them, and also on a Gen 1, for the stress on the CVs and rods.

Disappointed in you. I use it all the time. Of course it does work a bit better with the UHP tires on it.
