Typically this is done to induce the moire effect in the photograph so as to hide the final body shape. Pretty common in the industry.

I used to work out at Denver West and there were always test vehicles like this in the Denver West Marriott parking lot. I believe they do a ton of high altitude/mountain testing just west of Denver and it was a good base.

Still common practice, but it has little or much reduced effect on modern digital cameras and video/ image presentation. Tech gets much better all the time. And yet the changing lines and patterns still obscure quite a few details as it makes it difficult from pictures to determine shadow placement and decipher the smaller details.

Prior to digital cameras it became commonly used as it wreaked havoc on printing systems. Newspaper and magazines attempting to reprint the image would go from severe moire to pure mud.

A lot of automakers do this nowadays to draw more attention, rather than to obscure from the competition. If they really want to hide details, they use the loose-fitting or padded blanket wraps or coverings. I think the variable direction stripe wraps actually look amazing on the R1S.

Many/most manufacturers love running the I-70 corridor from that area up into the mountains for all sorts of testing. See lots of everything around there.
