Maybe a stupid question here. I am very much into Apple and endeavor to stay as far away, as I can reasonably get, from anything Google (maps, Waze, android, gmail, whatever). One of the main reason for this is a concern for my privacy and security. I have never had CarPlay, so I can’t say that I have missed it or felt that I really needed it. Getting into my R1T is an escape from all of that stuff. But, I do like my Apple Music and occasionally have a need for mapping. Now, it seems that Rivian is committing to a relationship with Google and may not offer its customers Apple options - very, very disappointing 😡 I’m a Connect+ member with Rivian, but have to wonder if, going forward, I really need it.

Anyway, my question is, with EV Play and CarPlay will I have access to Apple Music, Apple Maps, Podcasts, etc., etc. without having my iPhone with me? Are all the CarPlay apps available independent of the phone? Is the Apple Music sound quality equivalent to what is provided by Rivian’s system? OR, is it all BT from the phone?

I converted to the subscription but had a question about the support terms. It said something like subscription users would get 18 months of support (vs 12 months for non subscription users). When does the 18 months start counting? I would have assumed that support would continue for the entire duration of the subscription, so that if I renewed for another year I would get another year of support (24 months in this example). What am I missing?
You get the first 30 days free starting from the time you converted you order, which gives me time to build and ship the unit. After those 30 days you get 18 months of support, meaning, you'll still get an additional 6 months of support even if you don't renew. If you do renew, you'll continue to receive support during the term of your membership. With that said, the real value-add for continued subscription renewal is access to new features and the EVP community.

You need a phone. CarPlay is just mirroring what is on your phone. Curious about this use case - you drive places without your phone?

Yes. Believe it or not, I often go places without my phone. It’s crazy that that sounds so strange, in this modern world. However, I have a cellular enabled Apple Watch that can make and receive calls, text and emails, if needed. It is liberating to not always have to worry about grabbing my darn phone every time I leave the house. .

If you download the apps for those services, and use the hotspot in the Rivian, you could theoretically use those services without your phone. (If my understanding is correct). It wouldn't be through car play, but the apps themselves.

I think the audio is played by Bluetooth from the EVplay device

Apple CarPlay only works with an iPhone.

Hmmm, interesting. I’m not sure how that would work. I‘m don’t care about CP as much as some. At this point, I’m mainly concerned about Apple Music and maps. The BT audio would be a bummer. As for the mapping, while I often go locally without my phone, I would likely have my phone with me on any trip where I might need mapping. It would just be soooo much better if Rivian gave us options, besides Google.

Why not use the Rivian's built-in Apple Music app?

It's been a while but but I'm pretty sure EVplay has an android os so it can do apps.

I could be way off though. Hopefully I get it soon

Exactly this, imagine a full android tablet experience on the Rivian screen.

I will use Rivian’s built in Apple Music, for the time being. It comes with my Connect+ subscription. At this point, it is the only Connect+ feature that has any value to me. Google Cast - nope. Google Maps - nope. YouTube - nope, priority update timing - nope. And the list goes on. Nothing to see there, for me, except the Apple Music. Will likely cancel my Connect+ when renewal time comes up. Very disappointing for my $80K truck.

Apple music and Google cast seem legit. What else would you hope to get out of connect+ to make it worth it?

I signed up in large part for priority software updates. According to Rivian Roamer, 99% of Connect+ users are eligible for the latest update, and 8% of non-Connect+ users…but still nothing over here.

That's a good point. Sorry it hasn't hit you yet. It's interesting, when I was more in the Tesla life I used to live by the software update. I wonder if that was because I felt the car needed more, or if I was just excited about FSD? Hard to remember.

I haven't found myself caring much about software updates in the Rivian so far. I think it's in part because I really enjoy the vehicle as it and partially because I know the drivers assist won't be getting much better.

Evplay will add to the software excitement for me though. Can't wait
