Hello Keri,

Thank you for taking my call today. As discussed today, I have put together the estimate for the next steps in repairs on your vehicle and attached it to this email. I just wanted to reiterate that our team was hopeful that we would be able to repair and clean the damaged harness rather than replace it but we are finding multiple faults with multiple systems related to the harness in question. Also, performing this type of repair may lead to failures in the future. I have also included some of the photos we've taken with the foreign substance that had leaked onto the harness from the rear cargo area and would describe it as a "tree sap" type of substance. I would also like to state that this repair estimate is for the next step of repair. We must replace the damaged harness first because we can see that it is damaged and although there is a good chance that this could fix the vehicle entirely, there's still a possibility of other underlying issues we won't be able to detect until the damaged harness is replaced. Due to the repair cost, it may be in your best interest to contact your insurance company. Please note that Rivian doesn't bill insurance companies. This would be an out of pocket expense for you that you would seek reimbursement for.

Additionally, when the vehicle arrived, the passenger rear brake caliper was seized and would not "unlock" to allow the vehicle to roll. I can't say with certainty that this was caused by the foreign substance and may have failed due to towing of the vehicle. This job item will be replaced at no cost to you.

Also, If you'd like to come down to the service center to inspect the vehicle in its current state, you're welcome to. I just want to provide full transparency of our findings.

In addition to the estimate, I have also broken it down for you here:
Parts- $3812.15
Labor- $2970.00
Tax- $315.07
Tow charge- $514.00
Grand Total- $7611.22

Breakdown of parts-

Harness- $3178.09
Left C Pillar trim- $199.51 (Must be replaced every time it's removed)
Right C Pillar trim- $199.51 (Must be replaced every time it's removed)
Left B Pillar trim- $117.52 (Must be replaced every time it's removed)
Right B Pillar trim- $117.52 (Must be replaced every time it's removed)

Breakdown of Labor-
Diagnosis - 1.0 hour labor
Body harness replacement- 12.5 hours labor
13.5 hours x $220 = $2970

Thank You Keri

What is the take away here? You're having an expensive electrical issue because a small amount of foreign liquid made it's way into a connector?

While stopped at a stoplight, the car locked up and screen displayed drive system disabled please service. Had the vehicle towed to service centre only one year old and not covered under warranty. I feel that a vehicle that is made to off-road travel and snow and water conditions should not break down due to a small spill in the back of the vehicle. Is the Rivian wiring system not protected well enough. Almost 8K seems a little steep for repair work.

Yes, almost 8K they are asking to repair and replace the wiring harness ? And still no guarantee that it will resolve the problem. The drive system shut down while stopped at a stoplight in the middle of town. My R1 S is a 2024 . seems to me that the wiring system needs to be better protected and this should be covered under warranty.

What’s the substance that spilled? The vehicle EXTERIOR is certainly rated for the conditions you state, however sensitive electronic components on the INTERIOR are not.

Why did you share out this out? You broke confidentiality agreements by posting it to a public website. And you also posted contact details for the service manager.

Seems like a simple continuity test would find the isolated issue of lost connection to be repaired locally. I have my doubts that it is even the harness. No real magic here.

Not a lawyer, but I believe the confidentiality clause applies only if you are not intended recipient. It's CYA in case the email is sent to the wrong person. Your comment regarding the manager email is very valid.

I'm no lawyer either, but the entire internet is not the intended recipient. A one off wrong email is one thing, but this is not that.
