Was backing out of my garage and had forgot to completely close the rear door on the
passenger side. The door ended up catching the trim on the garage door and got this small dent
the door wouldn't stay shut. The hinges were not bent.

If it’s just a door replacement it might not be as bad as it could be. But because we live in insurance hell, I’ll say $10k+

Well the initial estimate is for $8500, I thought it would be a simple PDR(paintless dent removal) and maybe the latch needed some adjustment. The body shop states they need to replace the whole door? Paint the door and both adjacent panels. Sounds like the inside components of the door and trim they reuse. I have State Farm and they wanted me to go to an unauthorized repair shop. I am electing to go to A Rivian authorized shop and pay whatever State Farm will not cover. I guess in the Rivian world that price is reasonable. Despite having no claims for 15 years State Farm will still raise my rates

Also, I have had my Rivian since May. Now I am in a Telluride rental it feels like a toy compared to the rivian. I keep leaving the Kia and forgetting to turn off the engine :) . Amazing how fast your muscle memory adapts to an electric car. I am already certain my next car in a few years will be another Rivian as the experience has been amazing so far!

Agree, that is not bad compared to many estimates we have seen here. Still feel your pain. And of course they will raise your rates - it’s what they do. And they need to pay for Jake and all those commercials

$8500 for a door? Lmao. That’s called the EV tax people. One of the reasons our beloved EVs might never go mainstream

Did you talk to a quality PDR guy or go through the body shop?

I agree it looks like a PDR guy might be able to handle it unless the hinges, B pillar, and hinge mount points are tweaked as well.

Is their no way for the bodyshop to close the door, even if it is inoperable for a few days of driving while the bodyshop gets all the parts ready? I had a very similar repair on our R1S where my wife backed into a pole and caused a crease across the rear quarter and corner of the door. Some of the trim pieces weren't reusable and out of stock, so I ended up running out of my 30 days of rental car coverage, while they waited for parts. Luckily I had another car to use, but if you have to wait for parts while you drive around in a rental, once the 30 days is up, it is up. You will have to pay out of pocket after that. I would not drop it off until your bodyshop has or at least knows everything they need is in stock. Also, make sure the bodyshop can do recalibrations after the repair. They removed the door and it required recalibration of sensors once it was installed back in the vehicle. The certified bodyshop went back and forth with the Rivian SC for 3 - 4 days, until they ultimately took our car to the SC to get it done correctly. It can be a mess.

Also, if they have to paint the rear quarter panel to blend the paint, Rivian specifications require that the rear quarter window is removed, along with a lot of other parts. Our repair was $7500 for minor damage like yours. And of course, the insurance on the Rivian doubled after that for a year.
