This is the first I heard that they'd only be building Large Pack R1T in 2022. Really wanted the MaxPack for longer range.

But I do not want to wait another 18 months or longer for my Rivian. I'm very disappointed in Rivian for not getting this information out sooner.

I'm going to take the range hit and go with the Large Pack. If you were holding out for the MaxPack, what have you decided?

My pre-order is July 2019. If I wait for MaxPack, that's 4 years! No thanks. "first half of 2023" means, what, August-September-October 2023?

Originally my order was for the Max pack. But when supply chain issues and delays for other much bigger and established manufacturers began I feared delays. For my use case the extra 30% range wasn’t a need. And waiting another year for it didn’t make much sense. I was surprised it’s only like a 20% take rate on the Max Pack but that explains it, prioritize the majority of customers with the Large pack.

better to wait a little longer and get something you want then to get your rivian with less range and find out you screwed yourself down the road. I don't see them releasing truck bed packs anytime soon so you can't fix having less range. The max pack isn't a need for me since I won't be towing anything, but it will very convenient in general.

This argument doesn't carry water. Only 50% of the Rivian models have Max Pack as an option, so a 20% take rate overall indicates a 40% take rate on R1T. Barely a majority. Rivian trotting out "Max pack is not that popular" is a sham.

And yes, you can build more Large packs with an equal amount of cells versus Max packs. But Rivian has had literally YEARS to secure enough cells for all cars. It is not a zero sum game.

I told CS a while ago that I intend on switching from an LE to a Max Pack if it doesn't change my delivery time. My statement might have been a catalyst for the announcement.

Not trying to be difficult here but it just makes. The cells they have will go farther when building the large pack. The supply chain was completely disrupted, by your logic Tesla has had years to amass batteries why aren’t they building twice or three times as many Model 3s?
It sucks for sure but I’d imagine Rivian’s goal is to get as many vehicles out the door in 2022 as they can. And since the max pack was always coming later it’s easier to push it out.

I am not scheduled to get the max pack until 2nd half of 2023. I was very disappointed when I received the news. For me I feel I have no choice but to wait(or cancel my order). I really need the extra range as we live in the middle of nowhere and we have cold winters which will affect range.

The real question would be 'How many people ordered the max pack?'.

According to RJ's information less than 20% of orders are max pack or explorer. I think they are making the right decision to make those last, as getting 80% of the orders out in the next 12-18 months is the best way to make money.

Not saying this just because I didn't order the max pack, but I guess kind of.

also Surprised only 20%. Maybe trade in the Large in 4-5 years if they have a 500 Maxpack. I also don’t need the extra range locally, but wanted it for road trips.

Yeah, I get that. Really wanted max pack. Live rurally, so that was part of it. I think I can make do with large though. Sorry to hear this impacts you. I’ve just been waiting so long, that I couldn’t hold out for 2023.

Profoundly disappointed. Adventure/Max pack holder since July ‘19. I have been able to go with the flow regarding the numerous delays and still think it is/will be the most capable for what I want…traveling near and far overlanding in retirement. Back in October I placed an order for a June build of the Bruder EXP-4 to be delivered sometime in July-August ‘22. When I received the email indicating my delivery for the max pack would be first half of ‘23, my knee jerk reaction was to switch to the large pack. Having a few days to ponder, I’ve switched back and decided I’ll trade-in my less capable 5 year old Lexus RX 450 hybrid for a ‘22 GX or LX to take advantage of my current vehicle still being worth 50% of purchase price. Either I’ll trade it when the R1T becomes available or see what else is on the horizon at that time. Disappointed.

They must really be hurting for battery packs because I doubt rivian thinks they will have a 100% reservation conversation rate.

Disappointed but not surprised if batteries are a gating item which seems likely given the number of EV’s announced and shipping soon.

I debated changing to large pack but used A Better Route Planner to look @ the difference between the two on a typical camping/hiking trip we might do from St. George UT to Needles campground in Canyon lands NP.

Large pack takes 16 hours to do the 851 miles there and back with 8 charging sessions 3 hrs and 40 min (with current charging infrastructure).

The same trip takes the Max Pack R1T 14.5 hours with 5 charging sessions for 2 1/2 hours.

Living in Utah we have numerous excellent places to explore but with limited charging options, lots of elevation changes, and high speed highways so waiting for the maxpack seems like the right choice for us.

Glad to hear your perspective regarding Utah. I plan on spending much time out there. Thanks.

Same here. Disappointed but there Is nothing to be done but hope more temperamental people get annoyed and cancel, shortening the queue.

My use case will not change so the requirement for the most battery capacity I can get won’t either.
