I just saw a R1T owner had his bikes and scooter stolen out of the back of his truck and gear guard did nothing. I am surprised at how easily the thieves cut through the gear guard cable with a cheap pair of snips and how no alarm or anything went off. I always assumed that it would set off the alarm if the cable was tugged or cut. Maybe I’m late to the party on this one, but what’s the point if no alarm goes off or no phone notification?

Yeah, I've seen it as well. Unfortunately the gear guard alarm triggering cable never made it to production, it was only touched on at the 2018 LA Autoshow unveil.

Locks and such are only ever deterrents to those unwilling to put in the effort. IF one is intent on leaving bikes visible in the back of an R1T, what I've been able to do a few times, is run the rear crossbar through the frame of the bike, and lock it down to it's latch points. Those will hold far better than any random lock.

Good rule of thumb is if your not sitting on it, don't let it out of your sight. 3 bikes stolen, 2 bikes mostly recovered, so I'm speaking from experience.

On the video, that's one thing I'll give that rear bed camera, the quality is good regardless of Gen 1 or 2.

I thought that alarm triggering cable was a great idea, but we never got it.

I have also had multiple bikes stolen in my life and for the most part there is no 100% secure method for locking up bikes outside. All we can really do is lock them up inside or make it too inconvenient for these shitbags to steal your bike because it would either take too long or be too noisy. Steel braided cables are no barrier.

I guess I am still surprised it doesn't alarm and notify off video motion though, even if the alarmed gear guard cable never happened. Even my Model X will set off an audible alarm if someone hangs out around my car for more than a few seconds, or detection of motion inside car, or anyone touching the car. It also sends a notification to my phone and has a prompt for live view.

Ford Canopy now has live ADT monitoring as an option on the Lighting. If it detects any motion, it sets off the alarm, sends notification to users phone with 2 way voice so you can talk to the theives, and ADT monitoring team gets notified and can call cops.

When I get to my rivian, I see the footage, so it clearly can detect it. I am just surprised to find out that it detects it and then does nothing at all. I think active theft deterrent system is pretty useful feature for a truck.

Yeah, I am surprised the alarm didn't trigger when they were moving that stuff around to get it out of the bed.

Gear Guard performance seems to be pretty inconsistent. We have seen others share evidence their Rivians were damaged without anything (video or alarm) happening and yet I have accidentally set mine off when unloading things from my bed because PaaK didn't unlock immediately when I came back for the remaining items 🤷‍♂️

I'm struggling to picture what you mean. Any chance you have a picture?
Definitely not winning any artistry awards, but hopefully this gets the point across.

Essentially just running the typical cross bar, but through the frame of your bike(s)

I have Airtags hidden on my bikes, which isn't a perfect solution but helpful. I can't track them in the middle of nowhere, but they definitely track when in/near a populated area. If I'm leaving my relatively safe area and need to leave the bikes in the truck, they get a massive high end cable run through them. The GG cable is a joke and just to stop a walk-by opportunistic asshole.

Ohhhhh.... THAT crossbar! Makes total sense (and I'd give you an award for the art if I had one to give! 🏆 )

I still need to pick up a set of those. Thanks!

My son and I just take the wheels off of our bikes. It only takes a few minutes. They fit nicely in the bed, and the bikes are hidden under the bed cover. Also, there is no aerodynamic hit from the bikes, which definitely helped with range when traveling between Colorado and California.
