Yes, if you're primarily interested in the tech, lease don't buy.
Or, if you want to be insulated from the rapid decrease in resale value due to it having “old tech”, which is more my thinking.

I’m not that concerned with most of the features, but I’d hate to have bought one for $80k, only to learn it’s worth less than half because it can’t support <insert latest technology here>.

Because some people get a car/truck for what it can do now, and are okay with that (Me, as exhibit number one, among others).
HA HA HA That's a horrible take and/or justification for your decision. These are on average > $90K depreciating assets, if you know in 6 months that your car will be outdated, why would you buy one today, knowing the price is staying roughly the same and the perceived value is vastly improved.

I bought my Gen 1 for what it is, but believed in a company making huge promises, I don't want or need the features of Gen2 or 3 - I just want a good ADAS system and UX/UI that isn't full of bugs.

Unfortunately this is where the car industry wants to go. Basically a subscription service for cars.

This goes 100% against the "EVs are the way to a clean future" that was utopian hope. Massive E-waste.

Will they be making Gen 3 R1S? I just got my Gen 2 Tri Motor and I love it... and while I have an R2 reserved, it's not what I want for my main vehicle...

Tesla hardware is sh_t compared to this. Not even close. Telsa software is not close either. Oh, and it is $2500 vs $8000 for a 5x better system. Tesla is sooo far behind
Did you see what they demoed? They are using end to end neural networks and it drives like FSD v10

And FSD v10 was done on a computer with 8gb of memory and 72TOPS without the use of end to end neural networks

Rivian is at least 3 years or more (at this rate) from delivering anything approaching FSD v14.

They could cheat some performance increase over FSD by fixing the maps for the entire U.S., but it would only obscure how close they are to self driving. this would be at least 4years away if it ever happened.

That's true for some people. There will always be some people that need the latest & greatest thing.

The type of person that keeps a car for ~10 years doesn't really care. Neither do the people who don't care to pay some subscription fee for self-driving whatever.
I'm one of those people. I love driving my Gen 1, especially off road. Two years+ on and I still look for excuses to drive.

It's a classic sell on the news. The price gradually increased leading up to this event and now that has happened, people are taking profits.
Or the news wasn't as good as expected. I think a R2 launch without Gen3 isn't good news.

Unfortunately this is where the car industry wants to go. Basically a subscription service for cars.

There will be a point where they make more money selling the subscription services than they do selling vehicles. Probably. That might be good for people who just want a simple truck and decide they don't need a subscription. I will probably be one of the subscription people, especially if it has Personal L4. That is next level, and worth paying for IMO.

So those looking for the lowest price are subsidized by those of us who want the cool stuff.

As a Gen 1 R1T quad owner, I am quite pleased to drive this AMAZING vehicle myself! Why pay for Quad power and capability to let a computer drive it?? I want to drive my R1T!!!!!
BTW - it isn't yellow.

In the distant future, autonomous driving might be more interesting to me. I think there are far greater improvements that need to be made to improve traffic management, traffic flow, etc. than autonomous driving. Especially since autonomous driving is being implemented at various level of effectiveness with different approaches and technologies from the various manufacturers.

What happens if your AI crashes into my AI or what if both AIs make a decision to try to avoid each other, that still puts them on a collision course with each other. What if I am injured as a result? Who or what is at fault? Are attorneys filing suit against the owner of the car, the owners insurance, and the AI or the manufacturer? Do I need AI insurance?

Sounds like the cost or privilege to drive a vehicle gets unobtainable at some point? Last I checked, my pay package does not look like RJ's or Elon's pay package. For now, just give me a good dependable car that is a joy to drive with dependability that will last for several hundred thousand miles.

Stock down 7% already.....investors wondering how this will hammer R1 sales...
What Rivian is doing is extremely risky. They are going up against both Tesla and everyone using an NVidia system.

What they actually demonstrated today was FSD 10 levels of driving. That's not good

The cost of delivering autonomy at scale is a lot once you have a tech that works. That means you need to either be a large automaker (aka Tesla) to have these kinds of funds or you need to have a system spread over millions of cars
