Also you would think that Gen2 vehicles would benefit from Gen3’s data collection via lidar the same way that Tesla uses lidar to validate FSD
I, for one absolutely do. If I remember correctly, they did state that Gen 2 would make use of the data

Just remember that when the new hardware comes out the resale value on older tech will tank. I suspect a 5-10k price variance on resale for same model year with and without gen 3
The value of the Rivian hardware is going to be dependent on how eyes off and safe the system is which could be many years down the road. By the time Rivian is ready, the car is naturally going to depreciate and there may be something new on the horizon like Gen 4 or Gen 5.

That's what makes the lidar value so unclear since we don't really know when the consumer facing software will be ready. The initial lidar benefit might be in Rivian's direction collecting data than to us as a consumer.

Going to be interesting. For me to buy I need:
>330 mile range on dual or tri
<25 min 10% - 80% charge
Gen 3 Autonomy

Otherwise I am headed to Traveler or iX3.

I'll offer a counter argument on resale values.
And aside from very few low volume specialty OEMs (like Ferrari) resale value is almost never a concern for automakers. Second- and third-hand sales is just not what their business is about. Most cars are depreciating assets. Silly to think of them (and argue) as financial investments. You buy and use them knowing it's going to lose value no matter what; self-driving or not.

I don't think anyone here thinks of them as investments even Ferraris take a dump, look at the SF90, down 250k from sticker.

The issue is that fast depreciation or planned obsolesce in this case hurts the loyal customer that would upgrade in 2-3 years now may never upgrade due to accelerated depreciation. All cars depreciate compared to investing the money that's not the issue. The issue is accelerated depreciation preventing repurchase from said buyer. I hate to bring it up but look at Tesla as a prime example. This is a serious concern for the automaker.

What would be amazing is that the 27-model year R1 gets all G3 hardware and 800v architecture.

If you can't afford the depreciation of the vehicle of the lot, you probably can't afford the vehicle or aren't being realistic they lose a ton of value as soon as they are bought new. This whole R2 G1 hardware versus G2 hardware when Rivian has said zero about final specs or price is complete speculation and not worth thinking about.

I have 2 reservations for the R2 and if they look, drive and are priced as expected I can buy 1 or 2 to replace existing vehicles.

Nowhere in my thinking is the hardware spec of the vehicle because that's not been released officially. Nowhere in my thinking is automated driving or hardware as we've got a Tesla and don't use V14.2.2 currently free for a month or two (pretty great at this point). Nowhere in my thinking is depreciation as it's a 5+ year commitment.

Generally agree except with a caveat: car tech is now on a similar cycle to phones - only good for about 5 years

I think at this point it would be amazing if thats not the case (well potentially not 800v). I’m half expecting that the 27 model year R1 with gen3 will come out at the same time as it does on R2 (or even before) - they will want to keep the R1 ā€˜top of the pile’ if possible: and if everything we have been told is true it’s actually not that major a lift to change out the AXM, rear view mirror, swap the bumpers from using ultrasonics to radar and add the lidar module to the R1.

re when R2 launches - a quick trip to normal and looking out over the lot would probably help answer that, around a month before launch I’d expect to start seeing them parked out there amongst the sea of R1s and EDVs.

Many of us would very much appreciate eyes on the R2 inventory at Normal. Since in the year it's supposed to occur, Rivian seems tight-lipped on a specific release date

It’s possible that you are right, however, I suspect there may be a price bump when the Lidar version comes out. Rivian has long advertised the 45K price point for the R2, but inflation keeps inflating. So I would not be at all surprised if the first batch meet that advertised price point, but the added features will cost more.
They knew the price they quoted would apply in two years time. Inflation in the past couple of years has been predictable and reasonable (not 9%) so they should be able to stick with it.
