22 R1T used purchase questions

Hey all,

I’ve been in the market for a rivian but indecisive on used vs. lease. A 22 r1t just came up for sale just down the road from me that was a lease. 37k miles, $49k. Seems like a decent deal.

May go take a look today or early next week. What are some things I should look at/for. Do I need to worry about the fact it is from the first year of production?

Ask for a service history like you would on any vehicle. Tires and 12v would be the only thing I would look at.

Make Sure you check under the floor mat driver side, closer to the inner edge no water leak or water spots, from the HVAC. that’s one problem, and check to see if the subframe was changed to G2 .. 12v battery as well

Beyond typical inspection for damage/tires, etc, below are some things I would check.

• Verify if accessories are provided, such as camp speaker, mobile charger, gear guard cable, air compressor hose kit, flash light, spare tire and change kit, et. You may or may not care about these, but may be leverage for better pricing if items are missing.
• If it has a PTC, exercise it a few times. If it has one and doesn't work, it should be covered under warranty. Again, something you may be able to work with on price if there are issues.
• I would go through all levels on the suspension to make sure there are no issues going from lowest to highest ride height.
• Test motorized items to confirm function, such as seats, steering wheel adjustment, side mirror adjusts and fold/unfold, frunk hood, gear tunnel door locks, and vent movements.
• I would get the VIN and chat with Rivian to confirm warranty is still in place. Unless it has a salvage title, it should be, but an easy check could protect you in the rare event it was black listed for some reason.
• Verify if you are getting two cards and a carabiner. If it's a launch edition it should also have a bracelet.
• I would check the lifetime miles/kwh, should be somewhere around 2mi/kwh depending on wheel/tire. If it's low, it may be an indication that it was driven hard or did a lot of towing.
• Test heating, cooling, heat/cool seats, heated steering wheel.
• Engage ADAS on test drive to confirm functionality.

It still should be under the 5yr/60k mile warranty. When you chat with Rivian on warranty, they should be able to tell you the in service date.

Do I need to worry about the fact it is from the first year of production?

Normally I'd say yes, but foolish me I bought a new launch edition in 2022 and really haven't had any more problems with it than I've had with previous new vehicles, mostly Hondas.

I'd buy it again and it is was totaled, I'd buy a used R1T to replace it.

Great checklist from Stevetom84 above but I will also add that some of those launch edition items may not be a deal breaker for you if you don't care about them (will you ever actually use the bracelet for example?). And if it does have some issues like the ADAs or gen 1 subframe, you can still get that fixed for free under warranty so I don't think it's a true deal breaker either. Same with the tonneau cover, apparently they'll even replace that with the new much quieter one if there's an issue based on threads I've seen on this forum.
That does seem like a good price. I got a used very early VIN (700 range) 2022 R1T LE this summer with 21k miles that did have some issues but Rivian took care of them and I still have another full year on the warranty. Amazing vehicle!

I bought a 22 used. No problems at all. I replaced the failed tonneau cover with an Interrobang manual one and found a used wheel for a spare. Very happy with the purchase.

1) Decide what you want. There were a lot of changes on the 22s. Frunk outlet, Meridian Audio, 12v under dash plug, tailgate trim, powered cover etc. If any of those matter to you, make sure you find the VIN range that has it.

2) Along the same lines. Make sure it has the options you want for the purpose you want. The underbody shield is a common one that gets overlooked. A very pricey option that isn't easy to retrofit. Either the truck has it or it doesn't. You may also not want it if you tow a camper as it eats into payload but you may want it if you offload. These are pretty standardized, but buying the right truck for you matter. Look under the truck to check for the shield.

3) Check for fit and finish. Hood alignment, door alignment were all very inconsistent in that year. See if any misfits bug you. Some of it can be fixed, some can't. If it bugs you before you buy it, it'll bug you after. Make sure you're ok with it.

4) Look under the truck for modifications. A common one is the steps or rock sliders. To do that, you had to drill into the underside panels. Most people will sell the steps/sliders but not replace the panels. Those panels will cost roughly $100-$200/panel (used) and more if new. You don't NEED to replace them, but they do affect aero and will collect debris as you drive if you care or you may not because you'll install your own. If you do have holes, check for torque marks on the bolts to make sure they were reinstalled correctly though.

5) Every other problem is TSB'd or warrantied so don't worry too much about it. Wheel clicks, water in the door, subframe, etc. You have a year and some mileage to figure that out. They're an inconvenience to you to have to take it to a service center, but they're covered. What you can't fix are #1-#3, so those are what I would focus on. #4 isn't a huge deal, more of an indicator for price adjustment.

I agree, many of these items are likely not needed, but if a number of them are missing, you may be able to negotiate a discount. I've seen some used ones where the previous owner basically stripped everything not bolted down to I presume sell on eBay. Ultimately the OP has to figure out what's important and go from there.

Has anyone had luck contacting Rivian about getting a history of service for a vehicle they don’t own? Carfax is clean but doesn’t show any evidence of subframe replacement or any other work. Not sure if it would…

To my knowledge Rivian won't release service records from a previous owner. It may be service center dependent, but mine wouldn't release them even after purchase.

I recently purchased a pre-owned 2022 R1T (36K miles) from a non-Rivian dealer. Rivian would not release the service history to me until after I purchased the vehicle. My R1T was at the SC 9 times in 3 years for various issues based on the service history. Good news for me is that a lot of the typical Gen 1 issues have already been fixed. Keeping my fingers crossed that it will be ok for the next couple of years while it's still under warranty. Hopefully, by then, Rivian will roll out their extended warranty plan (Currently only in TX).

I just sold my Launch Edition R1T this month and switched to a Volvo EX90 after owning it for 3.5 years or so. There were no ongoing issues I would warn anyone about.

I bought a used '23 R1T from a non-Rivian dealer and the local Rivian service center wouldn't release the service history to me even after I bought it and had all the registration etc. complete.
