Gen 2 Dual max performance vs Tri Max range comparison.

Just wanted to give a quick comparison in range testing between the two.

I just upgraded from a dual max performance to a tri max a few days ago, both gen2, and just did the same trip i have done many times from San diego to Universal studios and back, and just want to let everyone know that while driving in conserve mode the entire trip, the consumption was identical (i can't make any meaningful measurement of any difference) between driving the dual performance max in all purpose and driving the tri max in conserve mode.

Very happy with that, since long range is something I value very much.

With both R1S's I arrived at 65% battery SOC to Universal, and back home with 28% left.

It's great to get that data. The front motor setup should be identical between the two trucks, so great to hear the efficiency is identical. 420 miles of range out of a truck with that kind of power is bananas.

Both have same tires?
Yep the 22" pirelli scorpions, albeit different rims. The dual had the aero wheels which i liked more style wise, and the ones on the tri are just regular open and blacked out rims. Which are ok looking. But at least it shows the yellow brake calipers more.

And even still, in some parts of the trip, like passing and uphill, the rear motors engaged just like how the rear motor engages in the dual motor version.

Rivian has finally tuned the coupling and decoupling in the dual motor r1s very well and you can't feel it anymore. In the Tri, its still noticeable, you can feel the rear motor spin up couple and then when it decouples. Its not as bad as it was in the dual motor before rivian fixed the tuning in the dual tho. So unless lots of people complain, it might be a while before rivian takes the time to tune the coupling of the two motors in the rear when in conserve mode.

Great thing is that you can definitely feel the extra power even in conserve mode once the rear motors engage, vs when the rear motor engaged in the dual motor in all purpose. The tri just goes 😎

I am following this, because I currently have a loaner Tri Max, and will be getting my Dual Standard replaced with a Dual Max in a few weeks, so I am curious to see what differences there are. I never had the jerkiness of the motor changes on my Gen2 Dual, but I know folks did. I haven't noticed any major power difference in the Tri, but I do like the Ascend seats!

You're right, they've gotten a lot better about the transition on/off (less clunk, more whoosh).

When I step on it and I feel it kick in, my dumb brain goes straight to "VTEC kicked in, yo"

My dual max performance was really good, but after getting a great deal on my trade in, and getting lower apr and lower payment than i had on my dual max performance it was a no Brainer. I also off road a lot, and have had to get Winched out a couple of times in the dual max performance, which im hoping won't be the case with the dual rear motor setup on the tri. Will be going out to those same trails in a week or so to an off road event and try it there. Rear tires should be able to behave much better on the tri for max traction compared to my old dual.

So im very pumped for that.

But I have noticed a big difference in power level on the street between my old dual and my new tri. Try the launch control feature on the tri, its siick.

+1 for tri. I had dual max performance and now a tri. Can’t go wrong with tri.
You both feel like the cost differential was justified? Did you switch an S or T?

Well for my specific case, yes.

Rivian Paid my full loan on my dual, the price of the dual max performance when i got it in September 2024 was exactly the same price as of the tri max today. The dual had 2.99% apr vs 0.99% on the tri, and my monthly payment is lower by over $100.
Oh and I get to deduct the entire interest from my taxes on the tri, where I couldn't on the dual because of the purchase date.

So yeah, way better deal for the two motors in back, and the new interior. Which are the only main differences between the two, ah and zero miles on the tri vs 23k miles i had on the dual.

I am basically the same exactly position (long story involving a mistake the SC made with the body shop, besides being in a T), you convinced me to do the same, and I can get it quicker now versus the DMP I was going to have to wait a few weeks for.

Similar experience as @R1S-DMPerformance : our Tri gets very similar range as our Dual motor when driven in conserve. I think technically there is a few mi difference on a full charge (a little extra drag from the 3rd motor?), but in practical use, it’s the “same”.

I do prefer how the car drives around town driving both axles, though - typically put the Dual motor in sport mode when I drive it. Once rolling on the highway though, conserve is just fine.

I also like the interior better on the Tri, too.
