I'll solve this for everyone. You can buy a 2 pack of mechanical window-punches for about $25. Keep them in your car, and don't let the kids play with them.
Those don't work on laminated glass, like Rivian uses.

Well cheese and MFing rice. Looks like Mazda is going with no physical door handles as well.

Who in the hell in corporate is approving these designs?!?

Eww; worse that the gen2 front doors, but better than the gen2 rears in that at least if can be used whist the door is closed without needing tools to access. it’s really sad we are at the point of hoping some legislation comes in to stop this insanity.

Agreed - both better and worse than ours

But, unlike all Rivian doors, the Mazda's exterior has a key hole under the handle 👍

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the external handle on the R1S/T actually operate a momentary pushbutton that releases the door solenoid?

So, if the 12 volt DC bus is dead, in theory, even if the exterior door handles "presented" themselves, they wouldn't work?

My kid's an adult now, I'm not sure if he could recall the process to remove the plastic cover the get at the manual handle in an emergency.

I read this section of an NTSB helicopter accident report once and it stuck with me, in an emergency people cannot reliably recall awkward, difficult or frequently unused steps in a process to exit a vehicle.

If I crash my wrangler, I am going to reach for the same door handle I reach for every time I exit the vehicle.

If I crash my R1S, my first instinct is to push the release button, not to pull the handle.

(here is the accident report I am referencing if interested, and the section I found pertinent to this discussion)

https://www.ntsb.gov/investigations/Pages/LAX08PA259.aspx

"All three surviving firefighters reported that they were not familiar with the operation of

the rotary buckle on their restraints and that they experienced difficulty releasing their restraints.

One survivor stated that he was accustomed to flip latch buckles and did not understand how the

rotary buckle released."

That’s my understanding, and therefore the problem - should you be stuck inside, no one can get you out unless the battery/electronics are working.

And if you don’t know, you can push in on the side of the handle where it hinges, and the handle comes out. So if the car were unlocked, but the handle didn’t come out, you could still open the door.
