Very nice. Now, does anyone have the power to move me up in the queue for the R2? I joined a little late; expecting I may need to wait for the 2027 model year.

  1. Become an influencer, gain a large following and have a platform so large that you and your followers can't be ignored.
  2. Or, go talk to Out of Spec's Kyle and beg in exchange for personal favors.
  3. Or, just go viral like that skateboarding guy who lip synced to Fleetwood Mac and drank cranberry juice.
Your place "in line" may not matter. Look to R1 sales, it mattered only up to a point once inventory sales became a thing and as long as you are not dead set on certain options.

None of these suggestions is "up my alley," but number 3 clearly seems like the most fun. Let me give it some thought.

The final paragraph leaves me feeling optimistic, but must depress the hell out of early adopters.

I have a Kuat NV 2.0 for my R1T, and the Rivian tailgate pad.

The Kuat works fine on an R1S, but in the T, you can't drop the tailgate unless you have the swing arm accessory. So I only really use it when i need the bed for longer camping/road trips. With that, you can get a 1Up hitch rack on the T and not have the same issue.

The R2 was meant to launch with a dual arm accessory port for OEM bike racks and other attachments, but pretty sure it's been scrapped in favor of the standard hitch mount.
I second that; I run the same Kuat setup. They aren't cheap, but Kuat makes the best racks out there. That swing-arm accessory (Pivot 2.0) is super useful too and would also allow mounting a full-sized spare for R1S/R2 users when not running a bike mount.

I'm very happy with my Rocky Mounts rack, which swings out entirely away from the vehicle. Just didn't know how it might work with the lower gate on the R2. I don't understand bike racks that only shift down slightly to give "access" to the rear hatch. Not for people with dogs or who need to occasionally load heavy things in the rear.

Influencers skipping ahead was more of a bother. Safe to assume initial inventory will be Launch Edition only, with many options bundled and very few options to customize (wheel/tire packages and color ways). If you are flexible, you increase your chances of finding one sooner. Otherwise you play the odds, keep waiting for a match or your turn to custom config.

Good to know. Similar to the R1 roll out? They have my contact information. I'm ready. Now, what do I do if the Subaru Outback with 150k miles on it dies before they call? An R1 Certified Pre-Owned?

Probably. We will find out very soon. Rivian doesn’t do CPO per se. But original warranty transfers. You could also lease new or get a preowned gen1 R1S for a few years and let R2 line mature/stabilize. Development and improvements never ends. Waiting longer isn’t a bad thing.

Thanks, folks. I assumed this was possible, but haven't had an SUV that has both a lower and upper hatch opening. I have a Rocky Mounts rack, which swings out of the way for a back hatch to open and then to have full access to the rear. I think this will work with both a lower and upper hatch, but this question came to me before fully waking up yesterday morning. OH, NO, THE BEST LAYED PLANS...
If the R2 receiver hitch is as beefy as the R1, you will need to replace the Rocky mounts hitch pin/anti wobble bolt hitch lock setup with a longer one, as it's juuuust a little too short for the lock to engage.

The maxxhaul 50563 works and is inexpensive. I picked it up off Amazon.

What are the odds the Subaru does soon? Probably pretty low.

Yep, that's what they say, and we have committed to good maintenanc procedures, but it doesn't take a lot before you think twice before plunking down $4k, say, on a 2013 automobile, right?
