Ah dang. Didn't think of it earlier on the way back from LA. Went to Rove instead.

Info on rivianraomer:
Rivian—$0.39–0.55/kWh
Other—$0.45–0.65/kWh
Idle—$0.50/min (after 10m)

Seems on par with EA.

Like seeing more charging stations going up and RAN has always been reliable in my experience. Unfortunately the RAN is always last on my list for charging stations as I’ve found it to be the most expensive on my road trips. Maybe just where I’m mostly at, the SW US. Mainly California and Arizona.

It totally is dependent on location and Rivian’s cost to operate there; commercial utility rates, land lease, plus cost of maintenance contracts. Some are more remote, so imagine the cost of getting an electrician to service your remote vacation home.

Around south OC, EA is consistently 60¢ or higher until wee hours without membership. Supercharger has also gone up a few times in just 2 years. It’s also changed from a simple time-of-day price structure to flex pricing. Before, lowest rate was after 11 pm. Now, even after 11 pm, if there are more than 2 cars charging, price automatically hikes up to 2nd tier for the next 2-4 people to show up. There after, the price climbs to next tier up. The notion that Rivian is out to get you is misguided. It's not that personal. Their prices are based purely on their business realities and being a smaller player having less leverage to negotiate with external partners/providers to lower cost. And there is not much profit to be made in the charging business as is, regardless of network. Utility rates are going up coast-to-coast. Some are result of data centers and AI companies. Some utilities, like oil price hikes, though not directly connected to data centers, raise rates to make hay while sun shines.

Since I only use DCFC on road trips, I always sign up for the membership for the trip and cancel thereafter. Unfortunately Rivian does not offer discounted rate for membership and their Rivian price vs other is still higher than Tesla or EA.

Our last road trip for roughly 1,900 miles earlier this month, I used Tesla SC for all charing at roughly $0.36/kWh, except once at RAN where the Rivian rate was $0.59/kWh - simply not competitive.

Also Tesla SC are far more available and makes planning much easier.

I just did a quick look at an EVgo and Tesla close to the new RAN in Orange. At this instant.

I just drove past the Orange RAN this morning. All 12 units were unoccupied and the station was not shown on the in car map.

There’s not a lot of RAN on roadtrips but we always prioritize them if they’re on the way bec charging is always easy. Most of the time it’s not full like EA, EVGO is more expensive most of the time and Tesla SC could be a hassle if you have to take 2 spots.
