I did 7 hours of driving today. Mostly rural roads. I enjoyed driving my Rivian while listening to a The Rest Is History podcast. My day would have been much less enjoyable if I had had a computer drive my hot rod Rivian instead of me.
I’m a pass on Autonomy + at any price.
1. That’s a great podcast.
2. The thing I like most about the Autonomy feature is that it makes it a bit safer to mess with the stereo or select a different podcast.

I just got this email. 49.99 a month for what they have now is an absolute no. At those prices for current functionality, there's a market for Comma to make a Gen 2 compatible unit. The UHF is barely usable for free, let alone 50 bucks a month. I'm a little surprised at how expensive this is TBH.
Gen 2 Comma is coming.

Well Gen 2 owners should not pay the $2500 right now. Comma in Gen 1 is effectively Hands Free for our 3.5+ hour trip to cabin. Sure had to touch the wheel for 100 seconds total in towns where turns wheel over 90 deg were needed as 90 deg turning is a know limit on Gen 1. All this on unmapped, undivided, 55-65 mph, 2 lane roads and towns. And divided is even easier to do.

All for $799 one time purchase when on sale. Comma is pretty amazing for a small after market company.

Personal opinion.....this should be standard with even the Gen 1 trucks. There are ZERO technical reasons that it won't work. As best I can tell, it's only held back because lawyers, accountants, or management just simply doesn't want it to exist.

Hell my '17 Q7 had adaptive cruise while towing, and the camera/sensor array on that was abysmally small compared to a Gen 1 Rivian, much less the Gen 2 trucks.

You think in 6 years your kid won’t even need to own a car? As in won’t need one or can’t afford one?
Won't need one. It will simply be driverless ubers.

I'm pretty surprised at all the people in here freaking out about the price, when these exact numbers were announced at the reveal event with this exact same time frame.
True, but for me personally it isn't the price. It is the value.

UHF in my truck is not very good, and definitely not worth a paid subscription at any price. Maybe by March/April it will be significantly better. If not, I cannot see paying for something that is on par and worse (in some instances) than what I had in my Mach-e that was built in 2021.

To be clear, my Mach-e didn't have auto lane change, but the auto lane change functionality in my R1T is not very useful and definitely not worth a subscription. Other than that, UHF is just adaptive cruise, a standard function for most vehicles. Lane centering in my R1T is still pretty rough, and worse than what I had in my Mach-e.

I do think UHF will get better prior to the subscription period. But will the value be there? As of today, it is not.

BTW - thank you Rivian for giving us a better truck with every update! For me it is gravy, and greatly appreciated.

Nah, pass. A few times I've used 'hands free' in my R1 and previously Model Y when I was on a long straight highway and wanted to unwrap a snickers or something.

Humans are getting lazy. Its a car ... its meant to be driven. Otherwise get a chauffeur and sit in the back.

Also... instead of spending all this $ on Autonomy, why doesn't Rivian invest in ways to make the cars either:

1) better (you be the judge of what that means to you)
2) more affordable (ditto)

Whet changed between then and now is I’ve actually gotten a chance to use UHF. In its current state it is a party trick at best. Sure it works on all roads but it doesn’t handle curves very well, doesn’t make lane changes and doesn’t recognize traffic signals. It doesn’t turn or leave a street so you have to constantly activate and deactivate it. It also slows down on a delay and way too much if a car crosses your traffic lane. The car will already be clear then UHF will slow you down 20MPH.

I don’t think the current iteration is worth 50 a month. I’d pay a small amount to help fund development but 50 a month is finished software money. This is not finished software, not even close.

Gen 2 Comma is coming.
Hope so. I have a Comma 4 and Comma 3x in boxes at home waiting. Had the 3x in my Honda for a year and loved it, got the 4 with a promo and trade in for $500 total. I’d love to put it in my new R1T.

This is one of the things that baffles me. They build a vehicle that is engaging to drive, then say “hey, pay us to not drive it”. I get that for road trips hwy autonomy can be good, but that’s not what we’re talking about here.

I think that’s where the monthly makes more sense for most people. I am planning a big national parks trip with my family next summer, and I would likely activate it for that month and feel it was worth it.

I'm not upset about paying for a good product. The product they're trying to sell here is basically a beta. I wouldn't pay anything for it. They should wait until it's more refined to start charging. Does it not slow down their development to have less folk using it and therefore less data to improve it?

No kidding. If you hate driving that much get a minivan and have your teenager drive you around.
