curious if rivian could do an R1 without air suspension and cut interior costs and get a sub 70k R1? It could be a no-mans land place. Or do they need to go worktruck route and get prices sub 50? Although if they get too cheap they begin to cannibalize r2 sales.
What if, rather than doing a R2T, they do a R1T without the air suspension? Seems like a way to compete with Tacoma’s. And who really wants a truck smaller than a R1T?

And devalue a "flagship" model line? R1 was never planned or designed to be a competitor to the Tacoma. One is mass market product, the other isn't.

There absolutely is a market for smaller trucks in the US and the world. The US has no options in the new vehicle market due to a quirk in its regulations. If I remember right, it has to do with fuel economy penalties being higher on small trucks as compared to big trucks. I love my new R1T but if Rivian was also launching an R2T, I would have seriously looked at it before I pulled the trigger.

If autonomy is important to you, I'd wait for the next Gen R1 - that however could be a while - so if you don't want to wait at least another year, I'd pull the trigger now. Another factor to consider are service centers. The R1 is a relatively low volume vehicle. Once the R2 gets into semi-full production, the market is going to get flooded and my hunch is the service centers will as well. Meaning the queue to get your R2 serviced is going to be very long. I'd buy it now and take care of any of the issues you get sooner rather than later.

Another option might be to get a used R1T now and then upgrade to the next gen R1T in 2-3 years. That way the R2 will be a mature product - meaning the new tech will be mature and ready for the R1T, service center issues will hopefully be ironed out sd well.

The only downward pricing movement I anticipate will be in the used R1 market. As far as new vehicles go, I expect Rivian to downshift R1 production as R2 production ramps up to keep inventory levels in check which would mitigate against the need for heavy incentives.

R1 was always intended to be a lower-volume "halo" vehicle, and I think you'll see that shift become even more pronounced once there are lower priced R2 & R3 models available.

At the same time, we're all just guessing so my advice is always to find the best deal on the best vehicle that meets your current needs and worry about your next vehicle when it's time for your next vehicle (aside from placing reservations on any new models that you think may be of interest in the future) - all of which I admit is easier said than done in today's world.

ones with 240v outlets and a larger box.
Roger that. I don’t need those things. R1T has all I need.

You sticking with ICE vehicles? If not, which EV truck are you looking at?

Most likely referring to the Silverado/Sierra EV GM twins. Or even the Hummer.

I know some people slam it and it had some range issues, but I always thought the Lightning was a pretty decent EV truck. It was a contender for me until I realized that it wouldn't fit in my garage, and my wife's absolute rejection of Fords (bad experience years and years ago).

The Count's F150h rarely leaves the small rural county he resides in. But when he needs it, it's been solid and the 240v outlet is wonderful as you never know when you need to weld something... or charge an EV.

I know one Rivian owner that lives on a farm out in the boonies of Central Washington that also has a Lightning on the 'around the farm' work, and they say it's been working great for them.

Yeah, I can never own a Ford. Henry Ford’s political views along with the way he ran the Dearborn Independent have forever stained his reputation. I’m a history teacher, so he always comes up and not always in good ways.

HF's was a weirdo; almost as weird as Elona. Just look at Fordlandia. But AFAIK he is not too involved in current production.

Wait, isn’t Henry Ford dead and no longer running Ford in any way?
