All manufacturers delay the cheaper trims when vehicles first come out. It doesn’t make sense to focus resources and time on less profitable models initially.

If you are RJ do you make the 20-25k R2’s this year a $60k vehicle or a $45k vehicle?

This may sound crazy but if the lease numbers are reasonable, I’m tempted to sell my Range Rover and lease an R2. Free up equity and have a reasonable monthly payment. It’s a much different price point but I love the look and the materials and interior seem to be premium enough. 0-60 is important to me—I don’t need quad motors but dual is good.

I have no interest in any other vehicles in this price range which to me speaks highly of the design and features of the R2.

I test drove the R1S recently and really enjoyed it but mentally don’t want to pay $1100 a month leasing it when people 2 years ago were getting $800 leases for the same car.

I did the same -- I scheduled a drive in Knightdale, NC. I test-drove a tri-motor max pack R1S ($113k MSRP) first because I wanted to get a feel for the company and Rivian in general. I DID NOT like the way it drove. It pitched too much forward and aft under even the slightest undulations in the road. This was with the 22-inch wheels and street tires. Tried every suspension setting to no avail.

A few days later, I came back and test-drove a dual-motor Max Pack R1T with 20-inch wheels and all-terrain tires. I absolutely fell in love with the way it drove. It was much more stable across all suspension settings, and I loved the versatility of the PTC, bed, and gear tunnel. But I didn't love the $105k MSRP. Who the hell wants to pay that much for a truck?

So I've been eyeballing CarMax for the past week for used 2023 - 2025 R1Ts with the PTC. I've been dead set on getting an R2, but R1Ts with around 20k miles on them are hovering between $50k and $60k. Which is around the price range I'm looking at for a new R2.

I'm still torn, but I think I may lean towards the R1T for the form-factor. If I get the R2, it'll replace my Model 3 and basically be like having another Model Y (my wife's car) in the family, just in a different wrapper. If I get an R1T, I get truck versatility and wouldn't have to borrow my dad's F-150 or my brother-in-law's Frontier anymore.

Math is simple here -

An R1S Dual Performance runs $89k and has 7 seats.
The R2 has 5 seats.
$89k/7 = $12,715 per seat
$12,715 x 5 seats = $63,571
So add in a little for LE and we're at $65k....

(This is sarcastic, but honestly, you might be surprised if it comes out true)

I think you have to divide by π in there somewhere ...

If the LE is $55k or under I will be estatic. But my gut tells me it will be closer to 60k so that there is room to have the standard AWD around 55k, which is unfortunately the average price of vehicles these days.

It’s been a while and my memory is fuzzy but I feel like Tesla launched versions of the 3 and Y priced for mass adoption pretty quickly. They also hyped and talked about those models and price points. If Rivian just rolls out a $60K+ R2 (which is about 10ak less than the R1 preorders ) with nothing in the 40K range in sight it will be a disaster in my view.

It seemed like a still-insurmountable task to gain enough market share when the rumored price was 45k, not optimistic about finally breaking through at nearly 60k.
$60,000 (by some estimates)
+ $2000 Destination
+ $2,000 for paint upgrade
+ $5,600 Tax
+ $400 registration
----------
$70,000 all said and done.

Are there enough people looking to spend $70K on a 5-seat EV SUV that it will keep Rivian in business?

I can't see there being enough of them out there to save the day, no.

EDIT: I hope I am wrong though!

Like I've been saying for quite some time now... lots of deep pockets on this site. You notice it on any thread where some sort of new feature is thought up... someone invariably says "I'd pay extra for that!".

But this site doesn't represent the general population. We're enthusiasts. We visit forums. We nerd out about the small stuff.

The people Rivian needs to reach are those on the fence about getting an EV and need that extra push to hop in. They've already got enthusiasts with dollars in their hands, but they are just a drop in the bucket compared to the broader market.

I couldn't agree more! I hope they release the lower cost versions ASAP which have the possibility to be their Model 3 "mass market" vehicle. Elon said before the Model 3 launch that Tesla will sink or swim by the Model 3. I feel it's the same for Rivian with the base versions R2.

I’m still convinced it’s going to land right at, or just under, Model Y Performance pricing. If they hit $54,995, it’s game over. They won’t be able to build them fast enough. It’ll move like wildfire. There are literally thousands of Tesla owners who want out. This is their chance.

Rivian R1T R1S If the R2 Launch Edition price is $54,999 y perf pric

(320 mile, 650hp, no lidar), how do you feel? Good for us and for Rivian?
55k is not much higher than average new car transaction through all of 2025. It will be good for Rivian's balance sheet. And that translate to more $: for more service locations, for more service techs, for more RANs, for more Spaces/Outposts, for more engineers and software developers to continue to enhance delivered vehicles as well as new vehicles to come, to add additional production lines and to finish building the GA plant (so the $45k R2 and then R3 could be built). Rapid growth ahead.

Except that the pricing relationship is not liner.
