Rivian Vehicle Service Contract - does the pricing seem high?

Long message - I am sorry, but am cutting and pasting the coverage. Okay, I’m a Gen 1 R1S QM pre-order and have had mine since May of 23. So, I am pretty sure the big stuff, I am covered for 8 years and 175,000 miles. It now has a little less than 25,000 miles on it. I got an email notification that I need to enroll by March 11 or lose out on my opportunity to get the Rivian Service Plan through Assurant. I had been thinking about it a few months ago when I originally got the email, but had forgotten. Thought I had a few minutes to spare today to review what the packages entailed and their costs. Assurant offers two different ones. One is called the Preferred Vehicle Protection Package. For 2 years or 24,000 miles, the cost is $2,000. For 8 years, it is about $3,800. I am not shocked by this amount. It is a little high, but the car costs $85k and I know that we spent $2k - $4k for tire and wheel protection/PDR on our previous iX and then separately on our Cayenne. The coverage is decent although I live in TX and I think it is BS they won’t cover windshield replacement.

Coverage includes:

Tire and Wheel Repair or Replacement

• Covers tire repair for damage caused by potholes or other road hazards
• Replaces tire if damage is not repairable
• Covers wheel replacement if damaged by a public roadway hazard and unserviceable

Paintless Dent Repair

• Permanent ding and minor dent removal up to 4" (steel or aluminum body panels only)
• Repairs of accessible horizontal and vertical panels on the vehicle exterior

Windshield Repair

• Minor chips, stress cracks, cracks up to 6" on the front windshield from propelled rocks on a public roadway or other road hazards
• If your windshield is deemed unrepairable, cost to replace the windshield including Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) calibration is covered
• Note: May be covered by auto insurance

Key Replacement

• Repair, or if not repairable, cost reimbursement for damaged, lost or stolen keys

I am now excited to see what the Vehicle Service Contract costs. For 3 years (mind you, I don’t think this is an additional 2 on top of my 8), it is $2,434. If I go 7 years, which basically gets me to 10 total, it is $8,309. If I go to 8 years, it goes to $9,707. This seems a bit high.

• Traction Battery Performance, Repair and Replacement
• Regenerative Braking System
• Infotainment / Multimedia / Touchscreen Display Unit Repair or Replacement

• • Brake Pads
  • Hoses
  • Windshield Wiper Blades
• One time Wheel Alignment

Thoughts? How does this compare with Fidelity or Xcare for those who have it? With my 8 years warranty, I am really tempted to not get anything additional. But, as crappy as the roads are around where I live, I’m sure I will need to change out all four dampers at least once.

I've posted on here before, with a copy of my contract, listing out what is covered and not covered under the extended warranty through XCare. I purchased a 6yr/100K EW with $0 deductible last year for $7967. Just before factory warranty expired, I had 3 dampers replaced, with one of them failing out of warranty. I still have one original damper that will eventually need replaced. I'm at 73K miles and have filed 3 claims totaling $14K that XCare covered and about $5K that wasn't covered (subframe and door gaskets). Get those replaced before your factory warranty runs out! It seemed high at first, but given the high cost of maintaining a Rivian, I'm glad that I got the EW as I'm less than a year into the EW and it's covered the repair costs.

Without even reading it, I would say yes, the price is high. I used to work at a PE shop. One of the cos was a warranty company (they act like insurance) - the profit margin is insane.

Soon I may not need the space of my R1S. Do I trade it in for an R2 or purchase an extended warranty for the R1S, just because I love this machine.

Here is the section of my contract on parts not covered:

For the following parts and components including: Coolants, hoses, clamps, belts, mobile connector, wall connector, any future external connectors, and any related charging adapters, tires, wheels, wheel covers, wheel lugs and lug nuts, valve stems, light bulbs, 12V batteries, interior LED lighting, lenses, seat belts, brake rotors, brake drums, brake shoes, brake pads, upholstery, paint, glass, trim, moldings, weather strip/body seals, door bushings/bearings, body panels, sheet metal, bumpers, frames and structural parts, sub-frames, brackets, convertible top assemblies, vinyl top, conversion van appliances, shop supplies, environmental waste charges or disposal fees, lost or missing parts, electronic diagnostic equipment fees, freight, any repairs to correct rust, corrosion, water intrusion, water ingestion, water damage, water leaks, air leaks, wind noise, squeaks, rattles, odors, manual clutch system (friction clutch disc, pressure plate, throw out, and pilot bearing). For any options/equipment not originally installed by the vehicle manufacturer.

Trim is not covered, so when my tailgate cap or bed rail needed replaced, that was not covered. The slats on the tonneau cover are considered "trim" so they aren't covered, but if you have a motor failure requiring to get a whole PTC replacement to the new v2 (small slats) it was covered under the extended warranty ($3200).

I'm keeping my R1T until the wheels fall off! I checked on the trade-in value twice and could not believe how much it dropped. In May, at almost 58K miles, the estimate was at $52K. On 12/31, at 71K miles, the estimate dropped to $33,350!!! This truck has so much value to me with all the things it does and has taken me, but flabbergasted on what Rivian thinks it's value is.

I just traded in my 2022 R1T with 52k miles and got 38k for it at a Cadillac dealer. KBB was showing an average trade in value of 40k, but mine had a cracked windshield and worn out tires.

Texas - right now, it appears to only be available GA, ME, MN, NY, SC, and TX.

FWIW, I recently called Rivian about when the rollout of RivianCare would take place for the other states. They directed me to Rivian Insurance. My rep told me they plan on having it available to other states in 2026, with CA being one of the last states to offer it. Hope this helps.

Which Cadillac did you trade in for?

Escalade IQ Sport. I was able to get it 12K under MSRP.
