PSA: Just ordered the Starlink Standard kit for just $175 (plus tax, free shipping) in case anyone is interested. The deal is simply on their website. I'd been watching it for a while and it was $350 - happened to check it today and immediately bought it.

If anyone is on the fence, this might be a good time to try it. Note that this is for the "Standard" kit (and not the Mini), but it's what I was going to get anyway.

HOw is the standard working out for you? Can you post some pictures of the unit mounted?

Shows 350 for me? Maybe if I visit the site a few times over the next few days I’ll get the same deal. Nice snag though!

I bought it last August and it worked really well and allowed me to stream football games while we were tailgating at Penn State. My first couple of uses I simply popped out the stand and put it on the roof of the Rivian, but I had purchased the roof rack mount when I bought it. I then put it on a roof rack, but that was a bit of a pain since I don't normally keep the rails on so I think I'm going to take it off the roof rack for this year and go back to the the simple stand it comes with.

I think the promotion where I bought it ran for a full month, so just keep checking the Starlink website every week and you'll catch their next sale. I went with the Roam package and paid $50/month for 50GB and then $1/GB when I went over that last fall for the 4 months I used it and then $5/month since then to keep it active. They changed the plan on me so I'm not sure how this fall will look. I used about 22GB each tailgate, but this year it seems that they're throttling you when you go over your limit rather than just charging you per GB.

Thanks for that info. Im debating higher speeds of standard vs portability of mini. Is the standard antenna worth higher speeds? Would it be too large to mount under the glass roof?

My mini will still do 150mbps, do you need faster than that?

My use case was very specific...I really only use the Starlink when I'm tailgating at Penn State. I went with the standard for a number of reasons:
  • The initial price of only $175 (the Mini at the time was $500)
  • I wanted the additional speed in case there were 1,000 other Starlinks on Roam in the parking areas around the stadium
  • I didn't ever need to mount it inside the vehicle or use it while in motion
As mentioned above, I did buy the roof rack mount. The only other purchases I made for it were a bag in which to store the receiver and the router and then I also bought a 15-foot cable to replace the long one that came with it.

I think the Standard is probably too big and/or heavy to mount using suction cups under the glass roof, but I don't know that for sure. Also - I read a couple of weeks ago that Starlink was charging significantly more if you used it while moving. I think weekend pilots were complaining. Check it out before you commit.

Still the normal charge for in movement use up to 100mph. Luckily for me my plane can easily fly less than 100mph if I want to use it in flight still. For typical car use it won’t be a problem although there are new limits on days of usage for the Roam 50GB plans.

“Inland waterways and territorial waters (up to 12 nautical miles from shore). Limited to 5 consecutive days and 60 days per year in these waters.”

No worries - happens to me all of the time. I'll see a post come up that will interest me and I'll start scrolling through it only to see that it did catch my eye the year before because I posted there. We all do it.
