Am I the only one who thinks anything less than 400mi of range is legacy at this point?

The range normally doesn't matter much. There are good reasons to want more range at times, even if the charging time can be reduced to 30 mins (no 800V).

This Friday, I have to drive to a facility about 150 miles from home, spend 8 hours doing reviews, then drive back the same day. The facility is located at about 2,500 feet altitude and my home is near sea level.

Neither my Tesla or Rivian can make the round trip without charging (have tried), even though its only 300 miles. The climb is constant and the return leg is not downgrade enough to make up for the higher energy consumption on the way up.

So its couple of hours getting there, 8 hours there, and another 2~3 hours getting back or total of 12~13 hour day. I really don't want to add any more time to the total day. So, I will be taking my ICEV instead of EV.

Getting worried with the amount of people in this thread with bladder issues. You definitely should not have to use the restroom every 3 hours. Some of you need to get your PSA levels checked. Does everyone on Rivian forum live in senior living?
Some people do have bladder issues, some have cancer, some have bad backs, some have birth defects or injuries from accidents, others have suffered war injuries defending your freedom ... There are many reasons some people cannot sit in one place for hours. There are also people who criticize others because they are not like them and never can be.

I may be coming at this from another angle, but I see lots of people talking about range and comparing the 300 miles to vehicles that aren't trucks. I already have an Equinox EV and 300 miles range is perfect for that vehicle and the usage model. But a truck is not that. The Equinox EV is never towing, a truck likely will be. I don't need or want a vehicle rated for and that can actually do 400 miles for the 400 miles in optimal conditions, even though the Rivians can't really even do that since at highway speeds, it seems the true mileage is more like 370'ish in optimal conditions. I need a vehicle rated for and that can actually do 400+ miles because of the worst conditions. I spend most of my time in the mountains anywhere between Georgia and Maine and I do some light towing when moving around all of those locations. So my needs of a TRUE 400+ mile vehicle are to have usable range when the truck is 10+ years old with battery degradation combined with cold weather and towing possibly all at the same time. My real TRUE target point is an EV truck that can still have 150 mile range (or 2 hours of highway speed driving) when all of those bad use cases are stacked together. Most people, even myself do not have those needs for a non pickup truck EV but the truck needs changes things.

Car and driver says that’s the European standard’s range and EPA is 374

https://www.caranddriver.com/news/a70533015/2027-bmw-i3-reveal/

Guess we’ll get clarification eventually

C&D is wrong. Kyle specifically said that EPA is 440 miles from BMW, and everyone else is reporting the same. 375 miles doesn't make sense anyway, as the iX3 sits on the same platform with the same battery and is a heavier, less aerodynamic shape -- it gets 400 miles EPA. No way the i3 gets LESS.

I remember buying my 2018 Model 3, which had 310 mile epa range and 400V charging speed. I think it cost somewhere in the low $50Ks.

8 years later, today, I’d argue it’d be hard to find a new EV with 300+ miles range and 400V charging that costs in the low $50Ks.

8 years later, why aren’t EVs cheaper for the core EV specs?
If you are leasing, the Polestar 3 comes close with lease costs (20k incentive).

@DuoRivians, C&D has updated their piece:

Its battery pack, which is a structural element in the car, has cells that are 20 percent more energy dense than those in the bigger BMW EVs; total battery capacity is 109 kWh. BMW estimates a maximum range of around 440 miles based on the EPA's testing procedure.

By the time the Scout Harvester comes out (now 2028?) solid state batteries will be mass produced, at least in China and Europe.

https://electrek.co/2026/03/17/solid-state-ev-batteries-with-800-miles-range-become-reality/

Technology waits for no one, but to each their own. EREVs, hybrids, and ICE vehicles will still be around in 10+ years. Once faster charging, cost parity, and infrastructure catch up it will be the era of EVs. Just like ICE vehicles have dominated for over 100 years.
Perhaps, which is why I will reserve my decision until after the Scout is released and we see what tech it has.

I live in the US, so unless the tech is available here, it is irrelevant what China or Europe has developed. They could have cold fusion powered hover cars, but if our administration blocks that, I have no choice anyway.
