I just paid the one time fee of $2500 for Autonomy+. Not sure if this was a good decision. Currently, it sucks, but I’m optimistic for the future. I also plan to keep my R1S for a long time as it’s the best car I’ve ever owned. So why have monthly payments.

Back in 2017?...Tesla offered FSD for a one time fee of $1500. I remembered looking at it as vaporware (still is..) but decided to take a gamble on it. I never got the FSD that was promised, but Tesla ended up upgrading my vehicle multiple times because of that one time fee. That included upgrading the MCU, all of the cameras, even the wiring harnesses resulting in my 2016 being equal to a HW3 car. The MCU upgrade alone would have cost more than that $1500.

I don't know that Rivian will do the same, but the point is. It feels crappy now, but maybe...maybe it'll be ok...

I signed up for the Autonomy+ monthly plan today. Over the trial, it has worked great for me, especially since the last update. It also works fine in stop and go, and of course regen works fine when slowing down. I did not sign up for the one-time payment because I have an R2 on order and should take delivery when my R1T lease expires.

Kind of how I approached it, as well. The software is intrinsic to the Rivian. It currently has limitations, but I expect it will only improve. When I go to sell my R1T, that subscription will go with it; I consider that as a perk for resale.

Used it yesterday to get my cat 30 miles to the vet over identified 2-lane roads. I was nice to just set it and be able so give some focus to the animal.

I'm waiting it out. For me it's not worth the money yet. I have a lease and without at least stoplight recognition, I have to take over all the time. If it had parking assist and that, I'd consider the monthly.

I'll be paying the $2500 for Autonomy+.

1) I use it on almost every trip longer than an hour and many of the roads (two lane) that I use it on are not mapped.

2) I enjoy being part of the ongoing development of a software defined truck.

3) I don't really care how that other car you own(ed) handles any of it.

Do I "NEED" Autonomy+? Absolutely not. But you could make the argument that I didn't need the Performance upgrade, or the Max battery, or a $90K+ truck for that matter.

I paid the $2500 for my 2026 R1T. I use it constantly and I am hopeful for a point to point update in the near future. Fully admit that switching on and off is a pain but I am one of those people that would prefer the truck to drive itself. I had a model y prior to this and I rarely took control of the car.

Am I the only owner that gives nearly zero craps about autonomy? At almost all levels beyond adaptive cruise I could, quite literally, not care less.

Am I missing something spectacular in the experience of using it?

All of the FSD Tesla, and Driver+ miles I've driven have just felt like moving the workload from "driving" to "monitoring the system that is driving". I never felt like there was enough trust gained to actually reduce the drivers workload.

Maybe I'm just a luddite?!?!

Can you turn your monthly subscription on and off—pause it when you don't need it?

It’s a month-to-month plan. I didn’t read the T&Cs — who does? — but subject to check, I suppose I could cancel before the end of the billing period and it would end on the last day of the billing period, and then I could resubscribe when I wanted to resume, but I’d be surprised if there a pause feature.

I recently used it all the way from the Portland Metro area to Borrego Springs, CA and back. About 2,200 miles of driving. Most of it freeway but not all of it. I found it worked quite well. No issues with lane changes or stop and go traffic through LA metro area. I even hit some very dense fog in the Central Valley before sunrise and it handle it just fine. I was attentive and ready to take control during the fog events..... just in case.

Sure, there were a few annoyances. A couple of phantom brake events. Obviously the computer interpreted something it didn't like or was unable to process so it applied the brakes. This might be a "safety" default. Second, I spent most of my time driving in the right had lane. At every on ramp, the vehicle would steer a bit to the right when the on ramp lane merged and the right lane fog line ended. It's looking for a line to follow so it veers to the right until it picks up the line again. After literally hundreds of on ramps, this got a bit annoying. Finally, I noticed on sections of highway that are concrete and have grooves cut in to the surface for better vehicle traction, these grooves, which run parallel to the the lane seemed to introduce some confusion which would introduce a mild wobble or oscillation in the vehicles steering within the lane. Like the grooves were "lines" to the camera images being fed to the computer. Nothing to alarm the driver, just an annoyance. It also didn't do it every time, but it was the only common denominator when it did occur. Finally, they need to add a few seconds to the driver eye position warning. You need to have enough time to look at the center display before it starts to warn you to keep your eyes on the road.

May be not quite Netflix. I am thinking I would subscribe when I’m going on a long trip otherwise I would not have it in place. It’s a great feature and a great option to have.

I paid $2,000 for Tesla's "Full Self Driving" in 2019. I hope your investment turns out better than mine has!

Not buying the lifetime subscription on a lease, but I'll pay the $50 for a month here and there if I'm driving a longer distance. It's pretty nice on long boring drives up and down the freeways.
