You'd be surprised at how often vehicles fall off of lifts - regardless of the manufacturer or the kind of service/repair facility it's at.

If the person could prove that the service tech intended to damage the vehicle, then it's a different story.... but otherwise, accidents happen.
How often does it happen? I want to be surprised.

Between not taking the AI intro out before pasting, and then adding the fact that your “premature” interior wear is on a vehicle that you are actively advertising as a rental car might be some of the funniest content I’ve seen here in awhile.
AI spew is ruining forums and other online media. The use of a car as a rental limits the warranty coverage, no?

Also there was recently a thread about the special lifting pucks that Rivian uses, and someone said it makes it “impossible“ for it to fall off. Oops.

I think it's unreasonable to expect a brand-new vehicle to replace one that is 3 years old and a generation behind. The person who told you they would need some training, and that's unfortunate, but getting a new truck isn't something you should have expected. They offered to repair it, or offered to total it out and give you the money; that's what would happen in any other accident, so I'm not sure what your complaint here is.

I can understand being upset, but accidents happen. I say this as someone whose tailgate was smashed during the delivery of my first Rivian. Mine was brand new, I hadn't even seen it yet, and the tailgate was all messed up. I didn't demand a new one, even though mine was new, and it would have been more reasonable. I let them fix it because accidents happen. Rivan took care of the problem which is all you can expect.
I disagree with the premise that this is just another accident. It's negligence on the part of the Rivian service center.

Even if it were the equivalent of just another accident, that is not the way a brand such as Rivian should be treating the incident. If they want to be an American, Luxury, Quality, (insert other glorifying adjectives) brand, then they need to do the right thing and go above and beyond what would be done in just another accident.

Should the OP expect a brand new 2026 R1T to replace the damaged 2023 R1T? No, probably not. But a reputable, luxury, quality brand may just go ahead and do that in order to show how committed they are to customer service and to standing behind their products and service.

At a minimum, I believe they should provide a like for like replacement. A certified pre-owned 2023 RIT dual motor, large battery with around 30k miles in pristine condition. Otherwise, it's really bad optics for Rivian.

99.9% of accidents are negligence. That's why gun owners hate saying "accidental discharge" and instead use "negligent discharge." The Coast Guard changed all the verbiage around right of way and "accidents" to reflect the fact that there are nearly no accidents and rights are relative. We have a lot of traffic collisions, not accidents. It's all negligence.

Rivian would have to be found for GROSS negligence to have extraordinary penalties and liabilities here.

Anyway, making someone whole is the legal definition here. Money equivalent to the value of the loss ends the liability. (Which would includes something for rental/loss of use, and costs such as time off work to deal with it.)

These situations always suck, because the payout never covers the hassle.

But in the end, we all should resist the temptation to think that just because a big rich company hurt you, you have won the lottery. A large part of the cost of everything these days is just for insurance to pay lawyers who are prompting everyone to sue for everything, including the hassle, just look at every other highway billboard.

The problem with the lottery is, we are the ones paying for it.

This also applies in the current thread about the air dampers and making non-Rivian official parts.

Being made whole means covering costs, this includes lost time, which has a value. It doesn't include "hassle" which has no value.

a lot, numbers, don't know. But two post lifts can be really unsafe if the vehicle is incorrectly positioned when lifted. The arms of the lift can adjust to reach the jackpoints. Too far forward or back change the weight basis and the vehicle will be unstable. Can be more of a rookie mistake.

here's a common occurence since the release of the C8 at Chevy dealers.

Enough that there are YouTube channels dedicated to clips of such things & other accidents at repair shops.

I would almost guarantee you that they did offer that to OP but we will never get that detail from them. Just another hit and run. Yawn.

This is not a Rivian issue. This is an insurance issue. If the insurance companies (yours and Rivian's) are complying with the law, then what's the issue?

I get that this is a good forum to vent and talk about your feelings, but it's not going to change your situation.

Good luck.

100%

Step away, cool off, review again with a level head.

And a simple test would be to role play and put oneself in Rivian's shoes. If it was you who damaged someone else's truck, you would never ever compensate their 3 year old truck, bought at lesser price, with a brand new one with a much higher price tag. Never. Not even in the best pipe dream of your life!

Yeah trying to get a new vehicle for replacement for a 3 year old vehicle is quite unrealistic. It sounds like someone messed up offering it in the first place and that happens. But when they realize the mistake you really think because an employee misspoke now you are entitled to get a brand new vehicle.

if Costco was changing your tires and dropped it, you expect them to go out and buy you a new Rivian to replace it? Ridiculous.

Rivian is doing what any other company would do. The repair costs are high enough to total it and give you the value of the truck as it stands. If you are under water with your loan, that does suck and I would be upset to and you could at least try to demand that, that they cover the difference since this was not your doing. Technically they are not required to but you’d hope they would want to in order to keep you as a customer.

But this mentality of demanding a new truck is crazy.
