I think you are referring to DCFC, those are not going anywhere. How is one to charge up when traveling long distances?
On a Tesla v3 (if that's the only place you can charge, which I think is certainly becoming less of an issue), with a port near the front passenger wheel if they had located it there. Unfortunately they did not. :(

Seattle has been doing this on a trial basis for a year now.
https://www.seattle.gov/city-light/in-the-community/current-projects/curbside-level-2-ev-charging

Regardless, I'm glad I put my home charger in a location that was accessible to all four corners of my vehicle.

If only Tesla had that much foresight ...
Great to see, thanks for sharing that! So, US curbside charging very small but growing, while Tesla v3 posts not growing and in fact becoming an increasingly smaller fraction of total DCFC stalls.

Makes me wonder if moving the port on R2 from the right side to the wrong side is more about peeling away some Tesla owners in Rivian's favor than anything else. If there's a silver lining to this, maybe it's that Maxi-Me's piggybank gets a little smaller.

I certainly hope streetside charging appears in the US as well, and am disappointed that making it easier to use v3 superchargers that will not be around forever was seen as more important. I suppose if you're going to ditch your car after a 3-year lease (and before there's any appreciable amount of US streetside charging) it might be OK, but we keep cars for far longer and this was not a farsighted choice IMO. I'd have been much happier to pay an extra couple hundred bucks to run wiring up to the front passenger area and then everybody would be happy.
I agree. I am anything but excited to have to back the R2 into the garage now to charge. Having the port in the front makes better sense.

Damn, the white with the black contrast looks really good. This might be my 3rd color choice after green and borealis.

May this prevent the occasional charger drama with that charge port location
If I back the R2 into my garage then that charge port sits right in front of my electrical panel. Perfect.

Does the curbside charging not reach to the other side of the vehicle? Have never seen one before and am genuinely curious.

Having had a Mach-E and Rivian and now a Model Y, my preference has become rear driver's side but that is because I always back into spots. I'm personally glad Rivian copied this as well. I've had an EV9 also and it was at the rear passenger's side and this is by far away the worst place to put it IMO did not feel intuitive and felt like a mile away from the driver's side lol

And while V3 and V4 Tesla stalls are propping up fast, it is nice to have access to the old V2 stalls when needed and only take up one spot. This made a world of a difference in our last trip where all the charging stalls were being used (or ICE'd 🙄). I know people are encouraged to take up two spots for those if needed, but it really does feel wrong with others waiting.

The few that we have around my area, people just ICE them out since it’s in residential parking and no one has ev’s. It’s just not in the mentality of angelenos to willingly give up a parking spot for someone else unfortunately.

Besides cable length, doesn't seem like a great idea to have the cable connector sticking out from the car into the street where it could be struck by passing traffic. I've never seen a right-angle connector on a charging cable, I guess that might be possible but you probably couldn't make it too low-profile given the variation in vehicle body contours near the charge port.

I really wish they would have eliminated the silver trim that the bottom of the front and rear bumpers. The R1's look so much better with the black out package.

Fair point! Didn't even think of that.

Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.
Yeah, smart move of them to bring it back to drivers side. The earlier prototypes had it on the passenger side, perhaps they will move it for the EU versions when they start exporting as they have many street parking L2 chargers.
I personally think they should have put it on the passenger’s side front. Then you could have pulled INTO a Supercharger parking space in the US, which is how most Americans park. Also if you were pulling a trailer you wouldn’t have to decouple every time you stop to charge.

Although with the charging port on the driver’s side rear it will make it easier for people in the UK to street charge, since they drive and park on the left. Actually if I’m not mistaken they carry their own charging cables, too. Prevents vandalism of the charging station and you can buy a cable that’s long enough for your needs. Regardless they’ll have to swap the J3400 (NACS) ports to CCS 2.0.

I think the rear location was chosen because it’s closer to the rear motor, especially on the RWD. This way the wiring harness can be simpler with a shorter cable from the battery to the motor.

I'm absolutely certain there's virtually no streetside charging in the US now, but I sure as hell hope that's not still true in 5 years. How long are v3 superchargers going to be around, and even if the existing ones are all still here in 5 years, won't there certainly be a much wider choice of non-Tesla-v3 charging sites available?
IONNA is making good headway. They have their own network and they just bought all of Circle K’s charging network and are going to install Alpatronic chargers throughout the US.
