I want to believe but this has been vaporware on Rivian's part.

I'm hopeful, but I also don't need V2H functionality. All of our power lines are underground and I don't think we've had an outage that's lasted more than a hour in the 20 years we've lived there.

Rivian has shown their V2L adapter that plugs into the NACS port on the R2. To me, that means that they're updating the software to allow bi-directional flow through the port. V2H is just the next logical extension after V2L and, from my interpretation of the schematics (I'm no expert), it seems that this will be a second charger option from Rivian.

Only time will tell...

This patent is pretty detailed with a lot of references to physical design specifics, so it might be a real product. Or not. 🤣

Right now V2H is a risky investment as it ties you into specific manufacturers and not cheap to swap out every time you trade in a vehicle, best to wait it out until there is a universal standard and companies stand behind their product regardless of which brand of interconnecting products are used.

The Universal standard is there. It’s been finalized for over three years now.

There is zero reason for V2H inverter chargers not to already exist. The likely migration from 1772/CCS to NACS is just a scapegoat for recent delays the communication protocol is standardized connections may be completed with adapters.

Enphase has been demonstrating theirs and Sigenergy already has theirs on the market.

Are you sure about that? I think if the Rivian solution supports the NEMA bi-directional standard, it can be used with any BEV that also supports that standard.

That's great to hear I hope they all actually play well with each other and follow the standard.

You inspired me to google the Enphase product. It looks really nice. Now I'm wondering why Rivian is spending any time (including pulling patents) on this type of product.

Here's the Enphase announcement from February 2023:
https://web.archive.org/web/20230205183534/https://enphase.com/ev-chargers/bidirectional
"We are working ... to bring this revolutionary technology to market starting in 2024"

So yeah, looks great, and I'll buy one when it exists, but it's just not real yet. And if Enphase was that far along three years ago and still doesn't have a product on the market, and if no one else has a standards-compliant non-proprietary bidirectional charger available yet, don't you think there must be some reason for that? I've always thought the only reason Rivian got involved in developing a bidirectional charger was because the rest of the industry was failing to deliver.

And heres their latest from 6 months ago - the only issue with the system is that requires a meter collar right now.
Many PUDs won’t allow meter collars.

Because Enphase products are not available in all regions, vendors, etc.

I'm a believer in demand driven product development/marketing/sales. IMO the industry may be "failing to deliver" because despite what EV enthusiasts want to believe, there is not enough demand and profit potential to warrant their capital investment to bring these products to market.
