Curious, I left the Comma attached while parked and have seen it get very hot. I’m using the Comma supplied mount.
Removing it is kind of a pain. I inevitably smudge one of the camera. Then the cables are just hanging there.
I tried using my HeatShield but the Comma is in the way if I leave it mounted.
I tried notching a cutout in the HeatShield but it isn’t great.
1. Do you typically remove your Comma when parked for other than very short times?
2. If so, do you leave the cables hanging? Assuming that’s what it looked like at you SC visits.
3. Did you get a bag or something to store it in when dismounted?
4. I’ve seen people very concerned about recalibrating Rivian MobileEye, etc, after a windshield replacement. Do you ever recalibrate and mounting and dismounting Comma?
If I'm just parked for a short time I typically leave it up, but if I'm going to be parked in the direct sun for any significant amount of time, for example any time I'd want to use my windshield sun shade, I take it down.

To make it easier I use a magnetic mount - specifically the Chun mount, though there are others available like the beartech.

I also have a case to keep it in, but usually only use it if I'm transporting it, otherwise I just leave it down in the footwell storage area.

I never need to recalibrate from simply taking it down off the windshield. Usually only need to recalibrate after installing a new driving model, and even then only sometimes.

For a carrying case, I recommend the beartech case. Very secure and it's a nice size.

@gerrylum thanks for the videos.

I guess you don’t power down the 3x either when disconnecting.

I’m probably ok with the Comma sliding mount. You had said you don’t use magnetic USB-C for the main Comma power but looks like there’s a similar mechanism on the Chun mount.

What’s the appeal of the magnetic over the slide on Comma?

I might try again on a, um, “custom” sunshade (X-Acto knife and tape). Maybe make a flap that folds down or a spare piece to fill in the gaps.

The main USB-C port (they call it OBD-C) doesn't play well with standard magnetic adapters because OBD-C is wired a bit differently from normal USB-C. From what I understand, the magnetic mounts take this into consideration.

The main appeal of the mag mounts are that they don't require you to plug and unplug the USB-C cable stressing the port.

Just replaced the Comma mount and installed the Janka mount Saturday, running a single USB cable from the combiner connector under the dash.

Much cleaner with just one cable. And it Is much simpler removal for storage.

I mean the comma. What's the difference between the 3x and 4? Besides the size?
Size and better thermal management. In a hot climate, the 4 would be a better option.

Will it work in Dominican Republic?
It's completely offline and local once you get the software loaded. I don't think there are any geographic limitations as it's used in many other countries than the US.

Edit: From the Comma FAQ:
Does openpilot work outside of the United States of America?
Yes, openpilot is not region locked and can be used in any country. You are responsible for complying with local laws and regulations.

Oh great, so it doesn't need wifi once the software is loaded. Do you have any video that can show me step by step.. Beginners like me on how to set up and install?

There's no difference in the installation process between the 3X and the 4.
