They are desperate. I used the site’s trade-in calculator on my Model 3 last week. Within 5 minutes I got a text, and within 15 mins some called me trying to get me into an R1.

I was kinda taken aback.
Eh, all car dealerships are like this. I put in a reservation for an iX3 and Volvo EX60 this week and both times I was contacted literally within minutes. The person from BMW wanted more information about my build while the Volvo salesman tried to get me into a different car since they had no idea when the EX60 would hit my area.

That's different. You put in a RESERVATION. All I did was check out the trade-in value on my current car...

True, but like I said, the guy from Volvo tried to sell me an entirely different car...like 10 minutes after I contacted them about the EX60.

I know that current and possibly prior owners will have preference but i doubt it’s absolute. Meaning I doubt that a current R1 owner who put in a reservation last week or maybe even much of last year is going to be front of line compared to all the non owners who flooded the reservations day 1 hour 1 minute 0-10. I could certainly be wrong but that would really disenfranchise the next owners that Rivian really wants/needs to cultivate.

If the owner and reservation holder algorithm is truly paramount and without some deviations then probdbly >90% of new R2 are coming to California for the foreseeable future - think many months - and that is Definelty NOT what Rivian wants for national exposure.

Lease the R1 till they work the bugs out of the R2
Unfortunately, Rivian leasing isn't available in my state yet. Either way, I can't stomach a $1,000+ monthly car payment.

If you look at the trade in tool, when you say you want to see the price, it gives them permission to contact you. I also considered doing the trade in comparison and when I saw that, backed out as I didn't want to be contacted.

To them it's still treated as a lead and they will pounce on any lead they can get.

This is how it was explained to me by a Rivian rep at the Block party, and the Rivian AI on the site also describes it this way... So if somebody gets an R1 today and then reserves an R2, they bump my 3/7/24 reservation. I figure I'm one of the first in line for all the people without an R1 (got a res within the first 15 minutes of the reveal), but I have no idea where that actually puts me since a lot of people who reserved an R2 already have an R1.
And I agree about the feeling of disenfranchisement... Although I'd feel a little better if they gave people who are bumped free color choices (I realize that would never happen, but it's nice to dream).

I think none of us know at this point, and I doubt the AI has been informed about company internal plans.

that said. Marketing 101 would dictate, Rivian should endeavor to some extent to put MORE Rivians into MORE HOUSEHOLDS than they currently serve and not just adding another or swapping another for existing HOUSEHOLD. Every new household becomes a new ambassador of the brand. Extending exposure beyond the already dulled novelty from an existing household.

Logistically and operationally, it’s also not optimal since as I said above I can only imagine that >90% of probably the first 20-30K most likely will only head WEST to CA and west coast vs. pollination the other lower 48.

Broaden the base so to speak.

Leasing Model 3 until R3X comes out, but now I have an R2 reservation as well.
I answered Definitely to that question, even though I made my reservation in March 2026 and my current lease isn't up until the start of 2028. If the launch edition is still available then, I'll go for it!
Uh, the Launch Edition is definitely not going to be available in 2028. Most Launch Editions sell for a limited amount of time, say 6-9 months. Rivian’s previous launch editions sold for around 6-7 months with the R1T LE available in July of 2021 and the R1S available in August of 2021 until January of 2022.

The whole idea is to get the ball rolling by offering a well-equipped limited run vehicle at a premium, but with lots of extras to build enthusiasm for future sales.

In 2028 the Performance, Premium, and Standard trims, including the $45K trim, should all be available at various price points, so you’ll be able to take your pick. I’m sure you’ll have been able to do a demo drive as well. I’m in a similar boat with my lease ending at the end of 2027.

My guess is LE is offered through end-2026. Premium and Standard become available (plus those last few colors) for MY27.5 and Performance reverts to default configurations & pricing.

Counterpoint:

Early R2s are the most likely to suffer teething problems, and Rivian's service experience can be less than excellent. Far better to put those potentially troublesome early R2s in the hands of existing owners whose expectations are already set, and whose loyalty to Rivian is already established. Those households are much more likely to remain ambassadors for the brand through a rocky start vs. a net-new household.

I’ll take that bet, I think it will be easily into Q1’27, if not Q2.. let the GAMES BEGIN!

It’s a good point, but I would counter with that, while the R2 is indeed a brand new model for Rivian, it is NOT in my opinion a Version 1 product.. everything Rivian has learned about engineering, design, systems, integration, production, manufacturing control system, process, quality control, inspection both systems and human quality checks, and extensive testing is ALL going into this new product.

This “new” model is being built in an existing factory AND LINE I believe which has been building and refining vehicles for nearly half a decade now. That means a lot.

It is far more tested and refined coming out of the gates than the R1T ever was, or the R1S that followed.

there will be issues for sure. Issues with skins, rattles, some parts, etc. but the vehicle is also MUCH simpler than an R1T, and even initial R1S. Few parts, more designed integration from the start and much more refinement of hardware and software than Rivian has ever had before.

So yes, current owners who HAVE gone through a lot with early adopter problems MIGHT be slightly more forgiving, I would argue that some might feel in the face of any new issues with R2 “how long is it going to take them to figure these things out! - ARghh!”..

It will be interesting to watch, that’s a guarantee.
