Timer with multiple time slots is not smart. Mechanical timers did this 70+ years ago.

Smart would be maybe timers based on location. Or communicate with my home solar to project how much power can be used to avoid export or not depleting the home battery.

At least let me set the end time and the vehicle controls when to start and maybe even how fast to charge while still avoiding peak rates. Time estimate within 30 minutes would be fine.

Considering the uncanny resemblance of the Rivian Schedule Charging Screen to an old-school mechanical timer, it's even more ridiculous that Rivians can't handle multiple charging time periods per day.

Tesla does multiple time periods pretty well. It shouldn’t be that hard for Rivian to implement it.

I think the resemblance approach is kind of smart. They went with something people are familiar with, and modernized it.

The resemblance is smart. But the only thing they modernized is "the look". Everything else about it is a dumbing down compared to what mechanical timers were able to achieve 50+ years ago.

When I bought the truck, I called NStar to ask when was the best time for me to charge the truck to reduce stress on their network. The customer service representative consulted with engineering and came back and said they don’t care, which I found disturbing/clueless.
A year or so later, I attended an informational seminar about Electric Ferry boats and asked the attending NStar engineers. Their reply was 21:30 to 6:00.
When Rivian came out with their option to set the schedule automatically it set me at 22:00 to 15:00. (I guess late afternoon & evening is peak). That’s surprising but I guess daytime is solar gain time.
Does anybody know if it resets automatically?
I don’t have off peak rates but if I charge off peak they won’t have to raise my transmission charge for infrastructure improvements. and they won’t have to fire up as much standby generation which reduces my carbon footprint.

It's there, I just wish our PoCo had TOU charging rates to make use of the feature.

9 months have passed since this "Smart Charging" update and zero progress has been made in supporting multiple TOU periods per day, something that many other "less smart" and much cheaper EV/PHEV have supported for many years. Rivian should be ashamed.

Isn't the 'smart charging' windows coming from a service that Rivian is working with that does the actual communication with the utilities? If that service isn't either getting updates, or updating Rivian, there's nothing that Rivian can do.
