Offer CarPlay, put it behind the Connect+ paywall and everyone will pay for it.

Everyone would have a tantrum because it’s not free like other car manufacturers. Although I believe I paid for it when I had it with my BMW.

the data is worth more than the $12.5 per month that a users pay for connect+. Who knows how much of that $12.5 goes to AT&T

Apple gives CP free to manufacturers and doesn't allow them to charge for it. Apple doesn't really want this kind of fuckery. They also severely enforce user privacy, which Rivian doesn't like at all.

I just tried a few things with Rivian "Intelligence." Complete failure. I got video, will edit and post. It couldn't even find the Rivian SC near me, much like Alexa.

Same shit, different name...

The "physical button" for volume is a scroll wheel only accessible to the driver.

A software button being on the screen in a fixed place still requires looking at the screen to verify your finger is going to activate it. (And it can't be activated while you're in reverse with the reverse camera showing!) My Mach-E had a physical defrost button that could be found without looking and activated by feel, and could be activated no matter what state the car is in (in reverse, cameras showing, etc.)

Safety controls (like defrost/defog, like hazard lights as required by law, like door lock/unlock) should *ALWAYS* be accessible, and preferably also be able to be found and actively purely by muscle memory and touch for when you NEED to keep your eyes on the road.

And "software button in a fixed place" can still move - Tesla has moved the defrost control (and even hidden it from "always visible!") multiple times over the years with various software updates.
The passenger can change audio volume using a dedicated volume setting on their side of the screen. It is a volume icon. In the back your passengers can also change volume using the screen.

are you guys trolls or what?

I don't think enough has been expressed about how carplay might cause difficulty in the automated driving space, especially once point-to-point happens.
Why would it? Despite what people from Rivian keep saying (lying) CarPlay doesn't require a complete takeover of all or even one screen. And once they have actual full point to point automated driving if you have to use the main car control to choose the destination and enable navigation that would be the last time you need to use that - it's driving itself after all. Heck, there's no reason to even look at Rivian's display at that point.

Rivian will 100% absolutely put that stuff behind a paywall. And my ironic expectation here, is the people who are clammoring for Carplay, are also the same who want the car to do the driving.
Yes, the automated driving will be paywalled. They already told us that.

But WTF does that have to do with supporting CarPlay or not?

Why would anyone ever want CarPlay with such an amazing AI assistant. /s 😂

I wonder how much time and money went into that. Then I wonder how much of that time and money could have been saved by just integrating CarPlay into their stack

No. Not trolls. Just people who like physical controls for certain things.

I'm not a "no touchscreens, all physical controls" person. I even think the screen-control-only HVAC vents are "fine" since they now save positions with profiles so you can easily switch between modes.

But when different media sources have such different volume levels that one is good at volume 4 on city streets while another needs to be at 23 on the freeway to be audible, switching back to that one that's "good at 4" needs a *FAST* way to reduce volume. Tap-tap-tap-tap just doesn't do it. Even the scroll wheel is still a bit slow, since it isn't a true analog control.

I'm always confused when I see posts like this. If you haven't bought a Rivian because of this and won't buy one in the future, why are you on a Rivian only forum?
Maybe they're just lonely and need attention.
