The wife is 4'10" and was able to close the frunk lid at the Palo block party... although she did have to get on her toes. I'll probably install a strap or something (like already shown in this thread) to make it easier.

I just wonder if we'll use it only because we aren't used to a space being there.

The money would be better spent on power folding and raising rear seats
Not in my opinion. The frunk was an out of sight location for prying opportunists. Laptops and work bags frequently go in there instead of the back. It's also extra space for dirtier stuff, like wagons, balls, shoes, life vests, etc. Rear seat folding, on the other hand, isnt going to get used much in our family, especially without a 3rd row.

We can disagree on this one, its ok.

Great solution for the pricing / market R2 is in. Still will use way more than other Frunk solutions. However, likely not as much as R1's. I use them almost all trips in buth truck and suv. Perfect space for almost everything. Having 2 golf bags up front is a game changer.

As long as you can open it from the outside and it has hydraulic struts I'm fine with it. Now that Rivian has confirmed Youtube music is coming on reddit ama, the fixed glass roof without sunshade is the only thing that's keeping me on the edge. Seriously even Chevy Blazer has a glass roof you can open with a sunshade. I hate companies trying to emulate the worst features of Teslas

I use the R1S frunk running errands and on trips all the time as it keeps items from prying eyes.

The R2 has strong struts and does pop open on its own. To close you just pull it down and the soft close mechanism latches it. It worked well when I saw them in Santa Monica, I think is a good compromise from the full power lid.

We pull in front first to garage and have a bike rack on back of car. A frunk would be used extensively in our home.

only used the frunk on model 3 to store things since it was inconvenient to use regularly.

I just got my R1T and found the frunk highly useable...i'll use it the same way I used the trunk on the model 3. with the R2 having the back lift gate, I don't see a fully automatic frunk as being as necessary as it is in the R1T.

rember that up until around 2021/2022, the model 3 did not have a fully automatic trunk...I don't even know what the state of the model 3/y frunk is these days.

Calling daily frunk users that require remote open/close "rare outliers' feels very true. Don't take it the wrong way.

Listen I would gladly take an R2 with electronic open/close frunk myself however like others have stated, given the price point and core target audience of R2 I don't see that feature as essential when the goal is to cut cost and complexity. The goal is to tap into a different market.

I feel like people expecting the R2 to be an R1 are somewhat delusional. It's not expected that R2 core audience would cross shop an R2 with a "new" R1 however R1 owners can downsize or just own both which is not the core target audience. It's like a previous BMW 7 series owners complaining about the 5 series not having the same rear reclining seats.

This is the 1st generation of R2 however as generations progress I do foresee small options like pop out rear windows and self closing frunk probably being a feature.

Do you have a Rivian and welcome as a new member of the forum. You cannot tell from anecdotal comments how widely used the frunk is. For quite a few people it is used a lot.

I understand and agree with Rivians decision for not having a powered frunk on R2 and don’t think it is a mistake. But that doesn’t mean it would t be useful to have it for many people.

No, I don't currently own a Rivian or any other EV. And thank you, I’m happy to be a part of the community!

I fully plan on purchasing the R2 Performance model. I’ve wanted an R1S since before it was even released, but I personally couldn't justify the price tag for myself.

To clarify my earlier statements, I actually anticipate being one of those people who utilizes the frunk on a daily basis, as it's one of the many Rivian SUV features I've been looking forward to the most. I currently own an Infiniti sedan and a Jeep Commander. One of the things I've always valued in a car over an SUV is the ability to lock and store items completely out of sight and separate from the main cabin.

You are absolutely correct that I don't have any scientific data on frunk usage. It wasn't my intent to dictate how often people will or won't use it, but as you stated, I don't believe omitting the power function was a mistake. At the R2's price point, I think the electronic release is a great, acceptable compromise.

It boggles my mind the number of people that assume just because they don't use the frunk it means that no one uses the frunk.
I am another person that uses the frunk daily.
But I also am not butt hurt about the lack of a powered hood in the R2. The price cuts had to come somewhere.

didn't realize they made it manual only. that does seem like a giant mistake and a really odd choice given how high up the lid will lift. the frunk is what I get the most comments on when out and about...everyone wants one once they see how easy it is. No way my wife can reach up high enough to close it. between the manual frunk and the loss of oh shit bars, rivian is cutting most people shorter than 5'2" or older than 55 out of their target market. I'm sure they did the research prior to the decision, but they are making it next to impossible for me to buy the R2.

Would be interesting to see usage rates for R1S vs R1T. With the truck, i have no trunk and use the frunk almost daily as the convenience is much better than the gear tunnel. I’m sure rivian knows exactly how many times the frunk is opened on every R1S and made a strategic decision.
R1T owner here and we use our frunk a few times a week. I have a soft organizer in there and it holds groceries, etc way better than just letting everything slide around in the back seat.

same on both accounts. I got 2 pop out carrier type things from Duluth for ~$30 (looks like the price went up or I got them on sale). they fit perfectly in the truck and the shopping cart, so I don't even need bags anymore. they fold tight in a few second so they don't always take up a ton of space.
